Chapter 41 - The Betrayal's Calculus

The rhythmic, metallic ticking beneath the armored SUV vibrated through the wet asphalt, sending a primal shockwave of terror straight up Maya’s spine. She remained pinned to the ground, her body draped protectively over Sofia, shielding the trembling child who still wore the oversized yellow cardigan that smelled faintly of the diner. The blinding halogen floodlights surrounding the industrial yard cast long, skeletal shadows across the wet concrete, illuminating Julian Blackwood as he stood immaculately in his charcoal wool coat.
Dante did not blink. His gray-green eyes, usually cold and analytical, were currently locked onto the silver-plated detonator in his younger brother's manicured hand.
"You always despised the noise of our world, Julian," Dante said, his voice slicing through the heavy curtain of rain. "You hid in boardrooms and offshore accounts, letting me bleed to keep our father’s empire intact. Now you hire ex-special forces contractors to do your killing for you."
"Evolution requires a steady hand, brother," Julian replied smoothly, the silver-tipped umbrella shielding him from the torrential downpour. "The Five Families were archaic. Salvatore Cavallo was a fossil. By allowing you to tear them apart tonight, I have essentially outsourced the necessary demolition of our rivals. The Department of Justice is arresting the remnants as we speak. I merely need to remove the final unstable elements."
Julian’s gaze drifted down to Maya and the little girl huddled beneath the vehicle. "A broken butcher and a traumatized child who cannot even speak to strangers. You are liabilities, Dante."
Beneath the chassis, Maya’s fingers frantically mapped the slick metal undercarriage. Her bruised ribs screamed in agony, but her mind raced back to the metallic click she had felt. Her hands brushed against a hard, rectangular plastic casing clinging magnetically to the axle. It was a localized breaching explosive—small enough to flip the vehicle, lethal enough to ensure no one behind the tires survived.
"Dante," Maya whispered, her voice barely carrying over the pounding rain. "It's on the rear axle. Right behind the brake line."
Dante’s posture did not shift, but his tactical mind processed the intelligence instantly. He kept his sidearm raised, the red laser dots from Julian’s snipers remaining fixed directly over his heart.
"You think you can run the Blackwood Corporation alone?" Dante asked loudly, drawing Julian's focus entirely. "The syndicates will never respect a man who outsources his fratricide."
May you like
"They will respect the billions I launder for them," Julian countered, his thumb hovering dangerously over the detonator's switch.
In that fleeting second of Julian's arrogance, Dante's left hand drifted imperceptibly toward the heavy tungsten Blackwood crest card resting in his tactical vest pocket—the very card Maya had used to strike Marcone's mercenary back at the diner.
