Chapter 112 - THE SHADOW OF JURISDICTION

The crunch of heavy radial tires on frozen gravel disturbed the quiet of the coastal lane. Dante turned his head slowly as a single, unmarked black luxury sedan pulled into the circular driveway of the cottage, parking discreetly behind Sal’s yellow bakery van.
The driver’s door opened, and Marcus stepped out. He was dressed in a sharp charcoal suit beneath an open overcoat, his tactical rig gone, his hair neatly combed. From the passenger side emerged Lorenzo Valenti, clutching a heavy, locked leather legal portfolio. Both men looked exhausted after an overnight drive from Manhattan, but their postures held none of the coiled paranoia that had governed their movements for a decade.
Dante walked down the wooden porch steps to meet them on the gravel path.
"Report," Dante said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that felt grounded in the clean morning air.
"The cleanup in New York is complete," Marcus said, extending a hand to shake Dante’s firmly. "The federal task force under Agent Miller moved on the remaining warehouses at midnight. Every asset owned by the Cavallo and Marcone remnants has been seized under RICO indictments. The local precincts that were compromised have had their commanding officers suspended by the Southern District court."
Lorenzo adjusted his gold-rimmed spectacles, unlocking the brass clasps of his leather portfolio. He withdrew a thick stack of certified legal documents, each bearing the raised red seal of the New York State Supreme Court and the United States District Court.
"The primary petition was granted by Judge Vance at seven o'clock this morning," Lorenzo said, handing the papers to Dante. "Elena d’Agostino’s legal identity has been fully rehabilitated. The fraudulent death certificate filed in Zurich in 2012 has been vacated by federal order. The state recognizes her as the surviving, sole beneficial heir to the primary d’Agostino maritime trusts."
Dante thumbed through the heavy pages, his gray-green eyes scanning the court orders. "And the offshore escrow?"
"Seventy million dollars held in Zurich," Lorenzo stated, a rare, genuine smile touching his thin lips. "Under the power of attorney Elena executed at the hospital in Newburgh, the entire balance has bypassed any private accounts. It has been transferred directly into the Bennett Arts Initiative for Youth as an irrevocable philanthropic endowment."
Dante paused on the transfer deed. "She signed everything over to Maya’s foundation?"
"Every single cent," Marcus confirmed. "Elena told us that the money of the d’Agostino syndicate had drowned enough people in the Hudson. She said it belonged to the children who needed crayons and warm soup. She said she trusted Maya to build a school out of the graveyard."
Dante looked toward the sunlit windows of the cottage, where the silhouette of Maya and Elena sitting beside Sofia was clearly visible. A profound, quiet warmth expanded in his chest, unburdening twenty years of dark history.
"What about Silvio?" Dante asked, his tone dropping an octave.
Marcus exchanged a solemn glance with Lorenzo. "The commercial freighter carrying his container cleared international waters three hours ago. The transponder confirms it is docking in Palermo before sundown. Don Tommaso Corvo has already received the dispatch containing the numbers Sofia gave us. The Sicilian council has convened."

Dante closed the portfolio with a soft, authoritative snap. "Then Silvio belongs to his own past now. We are done with him."
He gestured toward the cottage door. "Come inside, both of you. Maya has fresh tea, and Sal brought sourdough from the city. The war is over."
