Chapter 48 - The Diner's Resurrection

Two weeks later, the crisp autumn air had fully given way to the biting cold of early winter.
On Mulberry Street, the shattered plate glass of Bellanote Diner had been entirely replaced. The bullet-ridden laminate counters were gone, swapped for beautiful, polished dark mahogany that matched the rear alcove booths.
Tony Martinelli stood behind the grill, flipping bacon with a grin so wide it threatened to split his weathered face.
Maya walked through the front doors, the little brass bell chiming brightly above her head. She was not wearing her yellow waitress apron today. She wore a warm wool coat and a soft scarf.
"Boss lady is here!" Tony called out, wiping his hands on a towel.
When Dante had promised to wipe her debts, he hadn't just paid her student loans. Through a series of untraceable shell companies transitioning into legitimate holding firms, the Blackwood Corporation had purchased the entire building housing Bellanote, transferring the deed directly into Maya Bennett's name.
"I still expect you to pay rent for the kitchen, Tony," Maya teased, sliding into the rear booth.
"For you? I'll make the best buttermilk biscuits in Manhattan every day for free," Tony laughed, bringing over a plate of warm food.
The door chimed again. Dante walked in, flanked by only Marcus. The heavy military-grade security details were gone, replaced by a quiet, understated vigilance. Dante held Sofia’s hand.

The little girl bounded across the diner, throwing herself into the booth beside Maya. "Tony made biscuits!" Sofia cheered, her voice bright and untethered from fear.
Dante slid into the booth across from them. The cold, terrifying aura of the crime boss was completely stripped away, leaving only a man who looked at the two women across the table with absolute, unconditional devotion.
