Chapter 10 - THE PURPLE CRAYON

It was 1:30 AM when Bellanote finally closed its doors for the night.

The main dining room lights were turned off, leaving only the soft blue night-lights illuminating the polished dark wood and burgundy leather booths. Outside, the rain had tapered off into a gentle, cool mist blowing off the Hudson.

Tony Martinelli stood near the front register, counting the evening receipts, while Marco finished locking the wine cellar.

Maya sat alone in the rear booth—the same booth where Dante and Sophia had sat hours earlier.

Her black apron was off, draped neatly over the back of the leather seat. Her long brown hair was unknotted, falling loosely over her shoulders in soft waves. She held a warm ceramic mug of chamomile tea in her hands, letting the steam rise against her face as she rested her tired feet.

On the table in front of her lay a small, blunt purple crayon and a folded piece of white paper.

Tony walked over quietly, setting a clean glass of water down beside her mug. He looked at the drawing on the paper—a simple, crude sketch of a purple cat standing under a purple tree.

"You have a dangerous kind of kindness, Maya," Tony said softly, his weathered face filled with a mixture of pride and quiet concern.

Maya looked up, offering her boss a tired smile. "He’s just a father, Tony."

"He’s not just a father, Maya," Tony corrected gently, sitting down across from her in the booth. "He’s Dante Russo. He controls half the waterfront from Midtown to the Brooklyn Bridge. Men tremble when he speaks his name."

"He didn't look terrifying tonight," Maya said quietly, her thumb smoothing over the wax surface of the purple crayon. "He looked like he was breaking."

Tony looked at her for a long moment, then shook his head with a quiet, affectionate laugh. "You see the good in everyone, girl. It's going to get you into trouble one day."

Maya didn't answer. She picked up the steel business card Dante had left on the table. In the dim blue night-light, the silver lettering glinted softly:

DANTE RUSSO

Russo Development & Asset Management

Private Line

She turned the heavy card over in her fingers. She knew what it represented—an open door, a blank check, a powerful shadow that could solve every financial struggle she had ever known.

Slowly, carefully, Maya tucked the steel card into the front pocket of her purse.

She didn't plan to use it. She didn't want his money or his power. But as she picked up the blunt purple crayon and slipped it into her pocket beside the card, she knew, with a quiet, undeniable certainty, that her life had crossed an invisible line tonight.

In the dark, dangerous world of Manhattan's underworld, Dante Russo never forgot a debt. And Maya Bennett had just saved the only thing he cared about in this world.

Maya smiled softly to herself, took a final sip of her warm tea, and looked out the window at the rain-washed streets of Little Italy, ready for whatever tomorrow would bring.
