Chapter 40 - The Razor's Edge

"Hold your fire!" Marcus roared, raising his rifle instinctively toward the perimeter wall, but his voice died in his throat as the mechanical hum of twenty heavy hydraulic gates grinding open echoed through the foggy night.
The industrial yard was completely surrounded.
Dante shoved Sofia instantly into Maya’s arms, throwing his body in front of both of them, drawing his sidearm in a single, fluid strike. "Get down!"
Maya fell to the wet pavement beside the SUV’s heavy reinforced tire, pulling Sofia beneath her body, shielding the little girl’s head with both hands. Sofia clutched Maya’s soaked shirt, trembling violently, but she didn't scream. She had learned to be silent when the world turned to fire.
Stepping out from behind the row of blinding floodlights was not Salvatore Cavallo.
Nor was it any of the old, weary capos of the Five Families.
Walking calmly through the gates, flanked by over thirty heavily armed private military contractors dressed in sterile, unmarked tactical black, was a tall, immaculate figure in a tailored charcoal wool coat. He held a long, silver-tipped umbrella over his head against the downpour.
Dante’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure, lethal ice.
"Julian," Dante said. The name tasted like poison on his tongue.
Julian Blackwood—Dante’s younger brother. The man who had managed the legitimate financial trusts of the Blackwood empire, the soft-spoken corporate executive whom Dante had shielded from the syndicate wars for over a decade.
Julian stopped twenty feet away, a thin, patronizing smile touching his lips. He looked past Dante, his cold gaze settling directly on Maya and Sofia huddled behind the wheel.
"You really are predictable, Dante," Julian said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly over the low hum of the rain. "You always were. You think with your blood, not your ledger. Salvatore Cavallo thought he was orchestrating a coup... the poor old fool never realized he was simply my delivery boy."
Dante did not lower his weapon. The red laser dot from Julian’s snipers danced across Dante’s chest, three distinct crimson points resting directly over his heart.
"You traded your niece to Cavallo?" Dante asked, his voice deathly still.
"I didn't trade her," Julian chuckled softly, shaking his head. "I orchestrated her retrieval. The Five Families are finished, brother. Tonight, their leadership will be arrested or eliminated in a sweeping federal raid based on files I handed to the Department of Justice two hours ago. The underworld is collapsing. And when the smoke clears, the Blackwood Corporation will stand alone, clean, untouched, and under new leadership."
Julian took one step closer, pointing a silver-plated detonator toward the undercarriage of the very SUV Maya and Sofia were leaning against.
"You see, Dante," Julian whispered, his smile fading into something hollow and monstrous, "there can only be one heir to our father’s empire. And it cannot be a broken butcher, or a traumatized child who cannot even speak to strangers."
Julian’s thumb rested squarely on the detonator’s switch.

Beside Maya, Sofia gripped her hand with agonizing force, her small lips parting as she looked at the silver metal in Julian’s hand.
And Maya felt the cold, distinct click of a magnetic timer engaging directly beneath her knees.
