Chapter 4 - THE RIPPLE THROUGH BELLANOTE

The single word echoed through the rear section of the restaurant like a thunderclap.
Near the kitchen doors, Tony Martinelli stopped mid-wipe. The linen towel slipped from his fingers, dropping onto the tray stand. His jaw went slack, his dark eyes widening as he stared across the room toward Table 12.
Across the dining room, Marco the manager froze in his tracks, his hand mid-air as he reached for a bottle of sparkling water. He turned his head so fast his neck popped, his eyes darting from Sophia to Dante in pure, unadulterated shock.
At the front bar, the three armed bodyguards stopped their quiet conversation, their heads snapping toward the alcove in unison.
Sophia Russo had spoken.
The child who had been declared mute by two top pediatric neurologists in Manhattan over the last seventy-two hours—the child who had sat like a statue through family meetings, police interviews, and private medical consultations—had just looked a night-shift waitress in the eye and spoken a word.
Maya remained crouched on the floor, her heart suddenly pounding against her ribs. She looked from Sophia’s small face up toward Dante Russo.
The crime boss went completely, utterly still.
His pale gray eyes were wide, the cold, impenetrable steel in his gaze completely shattering into a look of raw, unvarnished shock. His lips parted slightly, his chest frozen mid-breath. For a man whose entire life was predicated on absolute control, predictability, and ruthless anticipation, this single moment had completely unmoored him.
Sophia didn't seem to notice the shock surrounding her. She held the red crayon tight in her small fist, her dark eyes still locked onto Maya’s brown ones.
"I... I have a purple crayon," Sophia whispered again, her small voice growing slightly clearer, though still trembling with exhaustion. "In... in my bag."
Maya felt a lump form in her throat. She kept her tone calm and steady, fighting down the sudden surge of emotion in the room.
"You do?" Maya asked softly, her voice gentle. "Can I see it?"
Sophia slowly reached down beside her seat, pulling a small, glittery pink pouch from the bench. She unzipped it with trembling fingers, pulled out a short, blunt purple crayon, and laid it carefully on the white tablecloth right next to Maya’s hand.
Dante stared down at the purple crayon on the table as if it were an artifact dropped from the heavens. His hands, still resting on the table, began to shake visibly.

Maya looked up at Dante, suddenly realizing that every single person in Bellanote—from the busboys to the owner to the heavily armed men at the bar—was staring at her with breathless intensity. She realized she was still crouching on the floor beside the most dangerous man in the neighborhood.
Carefully, Maya began to push herself up to stand.
