Chapter 8 - THE GATED HOUSE

The property across the street was not a mansion.

It only looked enormous compared with the home Helen expected.

Four bedrooms.

Wide porch.

Ground-floor primary suite.

Accessible shower.

Small garden.

Black gate because the previous owners had dogs.

Sabrina bought it through a trust she controlled and placed Helen’s lifetime occupancy rights into a formal agreement.

That part mattered.

The house was not a temporary emotional promise.

Ryan could not pressure Helen into transferring it.

Vivian could not move in.

Sabrina could not casually revoke the arrangement after an argument.

An independent attorney explained the documents to Helen.

“You have the legal right to live here for life, subject to ordinary terms of occupancy. Your daughter owns the underlying property.”

Helen stared at Sabrina.

“You did all this before you knew?”

“I knew enough.”

“What if I wanted to stay with Ryan?”

“I would have rented it.”

Helen laughed weakly.

“That would’ve been expensive.”

“I do okay.”

“I know.”

It was the first time Helen said it without guilt.
