Oliver adapted first.
Children often do.
He liked the gated house because he could ride his scooter in circles around the driveway.
Emma called it “Grandma’s new house” before Helen did.
One afternoon, Oliver asked:
“Why don’t you live with Dad anymore?”
Helen thought carefully.
“Because I needed my own home.”
“Did Dad make you leave?”
“No.”
“Did Aunt Sabrina?”
“No.”
“Did Grandma Vivian?”
Helen paused.
Children deserve truth scaled to their size.
“Some grown-ups forgot that helping is something you choose.”
Oliver frowned.
“So you stopped choosing?”
Helen smiled.
“Yes.”
He accepted that.
Then asked for juice.
