Chapter 11 - WHAT HAPPENED TO RYAN

Ryan and Sabrina did not speak for four months.

Then their mother had a minor fall.

Nothing serious.

A sprained ankle.

Ryan came over because Oliver wanted to visit.

He stood awkwardly in Helen’s new kitchen.

The same kitchen where Sabrina had installed a stool because Helen refused to admit she was getting shorter.

Ryan looked around.

“You like it?”

Helen nodded.

“I do.”

He looked toward Sabrina.

“She paid for everything?”

Helen answered.

“No.”

Ryan seemed confused.

“Sabrina bought the house.”

“That’s what I mean.”

“No. I mean she paid money. I’m building my own life.”

The sentence surprised both siblings.

Helen had joined the library’s volunteer board.

She hosted a small book club.

She walked to a neighborhood café twice a week.

She occasionally watched the grandchildren.

Occasionally.

The word was revolutionary.

Ryan sat at the table.

Then said:

“I’m sorry.”

Sabrina waited.

Not because she wanted him to suffer.

Because apologies had become cheap in the family.

Ryan looked at Helen.

“I used you.”

Helen’s eyes filled.

He continued.

“I told myself you wanted to help because if I admitted how much you were doing, I would have had to change my life.”

Helen said nothing.

“I also lied to Sabrina about money.”

Sabrina folded her arms.

“Yes.”

“I thought if she knew Melissa left, she’d stop helping.”

“Yes.”

Ryan swallowed.

“She probably should have.”

“Yes.”

He almost smiled.

“Can you say anything else?”

“No.”

That finally made Helen laugh.

The tension broke slightly.

May you like

Not completely.

Enough.
