Chapter 4 - HOW “HELPING” BECAME WORK

Helen did not move into Ryan’s house intending to become a nanny.

At first, she genuinely liked helping.

Oliver had been five.

Emma had just been born.

Melissa—Ryan’s wife and Vivian’s daughter—had struggled with postpartum complications and later returned to a demanding job in pharmaceutical sales.

Vivian began visiting daily.

Then Melissa left for a six-month corporate assignment in Boston.

That detail mattered.

Sabrina had assumed Melissa still lived in the house.

She didn’t.

Ryan and Melissa were separated.

Nobody had told her.

Melissa moved north nearly eight months earlier.

Vivian remained.

“She said the children needed maternal family around,” Helen explained.

“And Ryan let her move in?”

“She doesn’t sleep here every night.”

“But she runs the house.”

Helen looked down.

“Yes.”

The arrangement changed after Melissa left.

Ryan began traveling more for work.

Vivian arrived earlier.

Helen handled mornings.

Breakfast.

School drop-off.

Emma’s naps.

Laundry.

Dinner.

Baths.

Night waking whenever Ryan was away.

When Helen complained, Vivian reminded her she was “living free.”

Except she wasn’t.

Sabrina was paying.

Helen did not know that.

Ryan told his mother the household was barely surviving financially because of her presence.

He told Sabrina Helen’s expenses justified the transfers.

He told Vivian Helen contributed nothing.

Three different stories.

All profitable.

“What did you think I was sending him every month?” Sabrina asked.

Helen looked confused.

“Sending him?”

Sabrina felt sick.

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

“I’ve been sending Ryan over three thousand dollars a month.”

Helen’s face drained.

“For what?”

“For you.”

“I pay for my own medicine.”

“I know.”

“I pay my phone.”

“I know.”

“My pension buys groceries sometimes.”

“I have the receipts.”

Helen stared toward the window.

Across the street, Ryan’s white house sat in full view.

“I thought he was struggling because of me.”

That was the cruelty at the center.

Ryan had not merely used Helen.

He had made her feel indebted for being used.
