Chapter 7 - THE BRUISES

The bruise on Helen’s forearm was not the first.

There had been three incidents involving Vivian.

The first was a wrist grab.

The second was a shove against the refrigerator during an argument about Emma.

The third was the forearm grab Sabrina saw.

None caused serious injury.

All mattered.

Helen minimized each.

“She gets angry.”

“She’s under stress.”

“She loves the kids.”

That language sounded painfully familiar.

Helen had spent her whole life translating other people’s bad behavior into conditions she could tolerate.

Robert had been kind, but emotionally reserved.

Ryan had been difficult as a teenager.

Sabrina had been ambitious and absent.

Helen became the family cushion.

The person who absorbed.

She did not think of it as a personality flaw.

She called it keeping peace.

Sabrina called it what it had become.

“Mom, peace that requires one person to swallow everything isn’t peace.”

Helen looked down.

“I didn’t want you and Ryan fighting.”

“We were already fighting. I just didn’t know it.”

That distinction broke through something.

For the first time, Helen began crying.

Not because Vivian grabbed her.

May you like

Not because Ryan used her.

Because she realized secrecy had protected everyone except herself.
