Chapter 6 - WHY RYAN NEEDED SABRINA’S MONEY
Ryan was not poor.
That made the deception worse.
He earned approximately $118,000 a year managing commercial building projects.
His mortgage was high.
His lifestyle was higher.
After Melissa moved out, Ryan refused to reduce either.
He kept the house because selling it would feel like admitting the marriage was failing.
He kept the leased SUV.
The golf membership.
The private after-school program.
The expensive holidays.
Then there were legal fees.
Sabrina discovered them through a payment Ryan accidentally made from the household account.
Divorce attorney.
$7,500 retainer.
Melissa had filed six months earlier.
Ryan hid the separation because he feared Sabrina would stop sending money if she realized Helen was not living in some happy multigenerational family.
More importantly, he feared Sabrina would ask why Vivian was still there.
The answer:
Vivian was helping him fight for custody.
Not legally.
Narratively.
She documented Helen’s “mistakes.”
Late lunches.
Unwashed bottles.
Oliver watching television too long.
Emma falling asleep outside nap time.
Then Vivian presented herself as the reliable maternal grandmother correcting an incompetent paternal one.
Helen did not know she was being documented.
Ryan did.
Sabrina found that out from Melissa.
Not Ryan.
Melissa called the day after Helen left.
“I heard your mother moved.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Sabrina stopped.
“Good?”
Melissa exhaled.
“I should have called you months ago.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because I hated your brother enough that I stopped caring what happened inside his house.”
It was ugly.
At least it was honest.
Melissa told her everything.
Vivian believed Ryan was trying to prove he had a stable childcare structure for the custody case.
Helen became the worker.
Vivian became the supervisor.
