Chapter 9 - THE APOLOGY

Lily didn't look at Master Vance. She didn't acknowledge the title, the record, or the legend that had just been dragged out into the light.

She looked down at Jake Reynolds, who was now sitting up on one hip, clutching his bruised ribs, his face pale, sweating profusely, staring up at her with pure, unadulterated terror.

He realized, with horrifying clarity, that he had just tried to bully a woman who had spent fifteen years breaking world-class professional fighters for a living. If she had wanted to, she could have shattered his orbital bone in three milliseconds.

Lily stepped closer to him.

Jake flinched violently, pulling his head back, throwing his hands up in a desperate, pathetic gesture of surrender. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"

"You owe my daughter an apology," Lily said softly. Her voice carried no malice, but it possessed an iron weight that commanded absolute submission. "And you owe Leo an apology."

Jake didn't hesitate for a single second.

He scrambled onto his knees, completely ignoring the sharp pain in his ribs, turning his head toward the teenage boy standing near the cubbies.

"I'm sorry, Leo!" Jake gasped out, his voice trembling in front of the entire room. "I was wrong! You... your sidekick was fine! I was out of line!"

Then, Jake turned toward Sarah, bowing his head until his forehead nearly touched the blue mat. "I'm sorry, Sarah! I'm sorry for disrespecting your family!"

Lily watched him for three long seconds. Satisfied that the lesson had been delivered, she turned her back on the fallen instructor, walking calmly toward the wooden spectator bench.

Master Vance stepped forward, bowing deeply from the waist toward Lily as she approached the edge of the mat—a sign of absolute, maximum respect reserved only for true martial arts royalty.

Lily returned the bow with a small, polite nod of her head.

"Your academy has good mats, Master Vance," Lily said quietly. "Keep your instructors under control."

"Yes, Champion," Master Vance replied respectfully, remaining in his bow until she stepped off the foam floor.
