Chapter 19 - Terms of War

The press conference took place in the grand ballroom of the Grand Horizon Hotel downtown, forty-eight hours before the scheduled bout.
The room was packed to suffocating capacity. Over two hundred combat sports journalists, camera crews from ESPN and regional networks, influencers, and local fight enthusiasts filled the folding chairs, their lenses trained on the raised dais at the front of the stage.
On the right side of the stage sat Derrick Vance, looking restored to his former arrogance in a tailored velvet blazer, flanked by Marcus Sterling and three high-priced legal advisors.
On the left side sat Lily Carter, accompanied only by Elena Ruiz and Sarah, who sat quietly in the front row of the spectator seats. Lily wore a simple high-collared black sweater and dark slacks. She wore no makeup, no jewelry, and her posture was completely relaxed, her hands resting flat on the mahogany table.
Marcus Sterling leaned into the central microphone, his crooked smile dripping with theatrical bravado.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Sterling announced, his booming voice filling the hall, "combat sports history is built on legends. Sixteen years ago, Lily 'The Silent Storm' Carter walked away from the sport with an undefeated record. Many called her the greatest to ever enter the ring. But the sport has evolved. Today's modern mixed martial artists are faster, stronger, and more lethal than the fighters of the past."
Sterling gestured toward Derrick. "This Friday night, at the Northeast Invitational, we settle the debate. A three-round exhibition: modern striking excellence against legacy reputation."
The floor erupted into a barrage of shouting journalists thrusting microphones forward.
"Mrs. Carter! Is it true you took this fight for a financial settlement?!"
"Derrick, are you planning on knocking out a mother of a high school student?!"
"Lily, how does it feel returning to the ring at forty-four?!"
Derrick Vance leaned toward his microphone, sneering across the table at Lily. "I'll make this quick, reporters. The video you saw on the internet was an accident. I was being courteous to a guest. But under commission lights, inside a cage, there are no courtesies. I respect Mrs. Carter's past, but on Friday night, I'm putting her to sleep in round one."
The room buzzed with nervous anticipation. All eyes shifted to Lily.
Lily reached out and pulled the microphone toward her. The entire room went dead silent. Even the camera shutters seemed to slow their clicking.
"I have three conditions," Lily said, her voice calm, clear, and utterly devoid of fear.
Marcus Sterling raised an eyebrow. "Conditions? The contracts are signed, Lily."
"The contracts have an amendment clause, Marcus," Lily countered, her cold hazel eyes boring directly into Sterling’s skull. "First: this is not a three-round exhibition. This is an unsanctioned, unified rules bout. Five rounds. No judge decisions. The fight ends only by knockout or submission."
A collective gasp swept through the press corps. Derrick Vance’s sneer twitched, a momentary flicker of uncertainty flashing behind his eyes.
"Second," Lily continued, her voice never rising above a measured conversational tone, "the purse. The entire winner’s purse—one million dollars—will be donated directly to the local youth athletic foundation to build public training facilities free of commercial predatory contracts."
"And the third condition?" Sterling asked, his fingers tightening around the edge of his notes.
Lily turned her gaze slowly from Sterling to Derrick Vance. The sheer, predatory stillness in her expression caused the young kickboxer to instinctively lean back an inch in his chair.

"When I knock your boy out," Lily said softly, "you pack up your franchise, cancel every debt in this county, and you never speak my daughter's name again."
Before Sterling could respond, Lily stood up from the table, turned her back on the flashing cameras, and walked off the stage.
