Chapter 10 - THE MOTHER AND DAUGHTER

Lily walked up to the wooden spectator bench.
She picked up her dark casual jacket, slipping her arms smoothly back into the sleeves. She sat down, put on her gray sneakers, and tied the laces with neat, precise double-knots.
She stood up, picked up Sarah's navy gym bag, and turned to face her daughter.
Sarah stood motionless, staring at her mother with wide, shining brown eyes that were completely brimming with a mixture of tears, wonder, and newfound awe.
"Mom..." Sarah breathed out, her voice barely a whisper. "You... you were a world champion...?"
Lily looked at her daughter. The cold, lethal "Silent Storm" vanished completely, replaced in an instant by the warm, gentle mother who had raised her alone for sixteen years.
Lily offered a soft, embarrassed smile, tucking a loose lock of brown hair behind her ear.
"It was a long time ago, sweetie," Lily said gently, slipping her arm through Sarah's as they turned together toward the glass double doors. "Before I had the best job in the world."
Sarah looked at her mother’s side profile as they stepped out into the bright, warm afternoon sunlight of the parking lot, the cool autumn breeze rustling their clothes.
"Can you..." Sarah asked, a sudden, bright excitement bursting in her voice as they walked toward their car. "Can you teach me that move? The one where you made him look like he was floating?"
Lily let out a quiet, beautiful laugh—a soft, natural sound that carried across the quiet parking lot.
"Only if we get those smoothie bowls first," Lily smiled, opening the passenger door for her daughter.

Sarah grinned, hopping into the car, looking at her mother with a love and pride so deep it filled her entire heart.
And as the sun began to set over the suburban horizon, casting long golden light across the dojo glass behind them, Lily Carter drove her daughter home, her secret finally at peace, her hands gentle on the steering wheel, ready for whatever lay ahead.
