Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING ON THE MAT

The physical transition was instantaneous.
Before Jake could attempt to pull his over-extended right arm back or bring his left hand across to cover his exposed ribs, Lily executed a classic, high-level offensive redirection.
She didn't use a closed fist to break his jaw. She didn't need to.
Her left palm struck the inside of Jake’s outstretched right wrist, nudging his momentum further off-center with a feather-light touch. Simultaneously, her right hand unfolded into a razor-sharp, open-palm heel strike that slammed directly into the side of Jake’s floating ribs with the hydraulic force of a sledgehammer.
THUD!
The impact was deep, heavy, and resonant—a sound like a wet sandbag being dropped from a three-story window onto solid concrete.
The air tore out of Jake’s lungs in a violent, wheezing gasp: "UUUGGGHHH!"
His eyes bulged out of his head. His two-hundred-pound frame buckled in mid-air, his knees collapsing inward as the neurological shockwave of the liver-adjacent strike short-circuited his central nervous system.
Before his body could hit the blue foam mat, Lily executed a seamless, circular pivot.
She swept her left leg behind his calf, grabbed the collar of his pristine white gi with her right hand, and used his own falling momentum to drive him shoulder-first down into the mat with absolute, terrifying control.
SLAAAAAAAAAM!
The entire training floor vibrated. The large glass windows rattled in their aluminum frames. The heavy trophy shelves along the wall clinked softly as the impact shook the room.
Jake hit the mat hard, flat on his back, his breath completely gone, his face turning an alarming shade of purple as he clutched his side, gasping helplessly for oxygen like a fish thrown onto a dry dock.
Silence fell over the Apex Martial Arts Academy.
It was a total, suffocating, absolute quiet.
The parents on the wooden benches sat with their mouths hanging open, iced coffee cups frozen in mid-air. The teenage students near the cubbies stood paralyzed, staring at their undefeated black-belt instructor lying helpless on the floor.
Sarah stood at the edge of the mat, her hands clutched against her mouth, her wide brown eyes locked onto the woman standing over the fallen instructor.

Lily did not raise her fists. She did not strike a pose.
She stood directly beside Jake’s gasping frame, her breathing completely calm, her olive-gray T-shirt barely ruffled, looking down at him with the cold, unyielding authority of a master who had just dismantled a minor inconvenience.
