Chapter 17 - The Lines in the Sand

The following evening, the sun dipped below the tree line in a fiery wash of orange and bruised purple. Lily stood in the grocery store parking lot three blocks from their home, loading paper bags of groceries into the trunk of her compact sedan.
The air was brisk, carrying the scent of dry leaves and woodsmoke. The parking lot was mostly empty, save for a few scattered vehicles near the pharmacy.
As Lily closed the trunk lid with a firm thud, a dark gray pickup truck with tinted windows and an oversized bumper pulled slowly into the aisle, stopping directly behind her sedan and blocking her in completely.
The engine idled with an aggressive, throaty rumble.
Lily did not rush. She did not look around in panic. She stood beside her driver’s side door, calmly sliding her keys into her jacket pocket, her weight settling evenly onto the balls of her feet. Her breathing slowed to a measured, rhythmic cadence.
The truck doors swung open. Two men stepped out.
Both were towering figures in their late twenties—heavyweight sparring partners from Vance’s academy, wearing branded athletic hoodies and thick gold chains. One of them, a man with a shaved head and a broken nose named Brad, walked forward with an arrogant, swaggering gait, cracking his thick knuckles.
"Mrs. Carter, right?" Brad said, stopping five feet from her, his breath reeking of cheap energy drinks. "Mr. Vance sent us to deliver a little courtesy reminder."
Lily looked at Brad, her face expressionless. "You're blocking my car."
Brad laughed, looking back at his partner, a towering bearded man named Garrett who crossed his arms and smirked.
"See, that's the attitude we're here to adjust," Brad said, stepping closer until his chest loomed over Lily. "You embarrassed our boss. You made a mockery of a respected gym. Mr. Sterling offered you a very generous contract to make things right in the ring. But we figured... maybe you need a little incentive to sign on the dotted line. Maybe an injured wrist or a broken ankle would help you realize that you don't belong in the big leagues anymore."
Brad reached out a heavy, calloused hand, intending to grab Lily by the collar of her jacket to pin her against her car.
He never touched fabric.
Before his fingers could even graze her collar, Lily’s right hand moved like a striking viper. Her palm slapped Brad’s wrist inward, deflecting his reach, while her left hand shot upward, planting the heel of her open palm directly beneath his chin.
The sound of the impact was a sharp, dull *thwack*.
Brad’s teeth clicked together violently, his head snapping back as his balance vanished. Before he could recover, Lily stepped inside his blind spot, grasped his elbow, and twisted his entire two-hundred-and-forty-pound frame downward using pure kinetic leverage. Brad smashed face-first into the hood of her sedan, his nose crunching against the cold metal, a choked cry of agony tearing from his throat.
Garrett’s smirk instantly vanished. "What the—"
Garrett lunged forward, throwing a wild, haymaker right punch meant to take Lily’s head off.
Lily didn't flinch. She ducked smoothly beneath the looping fist, pivoting on her left heel like a dancer. As Garrett overextended, Lily drove a pinpoint hammer-fist directly into the nerve cluster behind his floating ribs.
Garrett’s lungs emptied with a strangled wheeze. His knees buckled instantly, his vision flashing white as the pain radiated through his diaphragm. He collapsed onto his hands and knees on the cold asphalt, gasping for air like a landed fish.
Lily stood between the two writhing heavyweights, her breath completely steady, her hair undisturbed by the wind. She leaned down slightly, looking into Brad’s watering eyes as he groaned against the hood of her car.

"Tell Marcus Sterling," Lily whispered, her voice colder than the autumn frost, "that if he ever sends children to do a man's job in front of my grocery store again, I won't just counter. I will dismantle him."
She walked around to the driver's seat, opened the door, and got in. She started the engine, shifted into reverse, and tapped the horn once. Brad scrambled frantically out of the way, dragging his gasping partner by the hoodie, clearing a path for her car to back out into the open street.
