Chapter 20 - The Midnight Echo

Twenty-four hours before the fight.

The abandoned warehouse on the industrial edge of the river had once belonged to Elena Ruiz’s family—an old, dusty boxing gym with peeling brick walls, rusted steel girders, and the heavy, nostalgic scent of leather, sweat, and pine resin.

A single heavy bag hung from an iron chain in the center of the room.

Lily stood before the bag, her hands wrapped in clean white gauze. Sarah sat on a wooden equipment bench against the wall, watching in silent reverence as her mother began her warm-up.

*Thump. Thump. Thud.*

Lily’s punches were not wild haymakers. They were surgical strikes delivered with mechanical perfection. Every jab landed with a sharp crack that echoed off the high corrugated ceiling. Every left hook sent the heavy hundred-and-fifty-pound leather bag swinging upward like a pendulum.

Her footwork was a masterclass in balance. She shifted from offense to defense in fractions of a second, slipping invisible counters, ducking beneath imaginary hooks, her breathing steady and rhythmic: *tss-tss, tss-tss.*

Sarah watched her mother’s back muscles ripple beneath her sweat-drenched tank top. For the first time, Sarah didn't just see her mom; she saw the undisputed world champion—a lethal, calculating force of nature who had conquered the world without ever uttering a boast.

"Rest," Elena called out, holding up a digital stopwatch.

Lily stopped immediately, dropping her hands to her sides, her chest rising and falling in deep, measured breaths. She walked over to the bench, taking the towel Sarah handed her with a warm, exhausted smile.

"Thanks, sweetie," Lily murmured, wiping the sweat from her brow.

"You're terrifying, Mom," Sarah said, half-laughing, half-awed. "I don't think Derrick Vance has any idea what's coming for him tomorrow."

"Overconfidence is a fighter's worst enemy, Sarah," Lily said, sitting beside her. "Derrick is young, he’s athletic, and he’s desperate. A desperate man with pride on the line is always dangerous."

Suddenly, the ambient hum of the quiet warehouse was pierced by a sharp, electronic chime.

Sarah’s smartphone buzzed on the wooden bench. It was a location alert.

Sarah picked it up, her brow furrowing. "That's weird... my phone just got a push notification. It says my location was shared with an external network."

Elena froze, her hand dropping instantly to the heavy iron wrench resting on top of the first-aid kit. "What network, kid?"

"I... I don't know," Sarah stammered, tapping the screen. "It says CCL Security Protocol. It pinged my phone's GPS."

Lily rose to her feet in an instant, her senses expanding to take in the entire perimeter of the building. The warm, maternal glow vanished from her eyes, replaced by the lethal, ice-cold vigilance of the Silent Storm.

Outside the rusted metal roll-up door of the warehouse, the gravel crunched under the heavy tread of multiple pairs of combat boots.

Then, the heavy industrial door rattled violently on its iron tracks as someone kicked it from the outside.

A low, mechanical *beep* sounded as an electronic frequency jammer cut the building’s power grid. The hanging overhead lights sputtered, then died completely, plunging the warehouse into pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by the pale, slivered moonlight filtering through the shattered high windows.

From beyond the metal door, a muffled, chilling voice called out into the night:

"We aren't waiting for tomorrow night, Mrs. Carter. Mr. Sterling sends his regards."

Sarah gasped, shrinking against the wooden bench.

May you like

Elena gripped the iron wrench, stepping protectively toward the girl.

In the center of the pitch-black gym, Lily Carter raised her wrapped fists into her high guard, her eyes gleaming like polished steel in the moonlight, coiling every muscle in her body as the heavy metal door began to screech open—
