Chapter 5 - THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM

Jake bounced theatrically on his toes, snapping his hands up into a textbook high kickboxing guard. He rolled his heavy shoulders, his thick neck muscles bulging as he grinned down at the smaller woman standing ten feet away.

"Alright, people!" Jake called out to the crowd, his voice bursting with arrogant bravado. "Let's keep it clean! No crying, no lawsuits!"

The spectators had gone completely dead silent.

None of the parents were laughing now. The sheer contrast between Jake’s massive, muscular frame and Lily’s slender, understated presence was horrifying. Several mothers looked away, terrified that they were about to witness an innocent woman get brutally injured on a Tuesday afternoon.

"Whenever you're ready, Mrs. Carter," Jake taunted, lowering his guard slightly to leave his chin exposed, inviting her to try a pathetic, untrained strike. "Come on. Show me what you've got."

Lily didn't move forward. She didn't throw a feeler jab. She didn't react to his taunt.

She stood in the center of the ring, her brown eyes tracking Jake’s body with terrifying, clinical detachment.

To an untrained observer, Lily was simply standing there. But inside her mind, she was processing high-speed biometric data:

Distance: 9.4 feet.

Target weight: 202 pounds.

Leading foot: Right toe turned inward four degrees—indicates heavy reliance on a lead right cross or a rear leg kick.

Guard: High and wide—leaves the floating ribs and the sub-mandibular nerve angle open.

Tempo: Rhythmic, predictable, over-committed.

Lily took a fraction of an inch breath through her nose.

She remembered the roar of fifteen thousand fans at the Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo. She remembered the blinding white spotlights, the smell of canvas and vaseline, and the voice of her old master whispering in her ear before her third world title fight: “The storm does not fight the mountain, Lily. The storm moves through it.”

Jake’s patience snapped. He was irritated that she wasn't panicking, angered by the quiet, unblinking way she was staring directly through his chest.

"Alright," Jake growled, his smile disappearing completely as he dropped his hips into a power drive. "Let's get this over with."
