Chapter 16 - The Shadows of the Past

Elena sat at the small kitchen table, holding a mug of steaming black tea between two heavily calloused hands. Her knuckles bore the crooked scars of an old bare-knuckle champion, a testament to a life spent entirely within the violent machinery of professional combat.
Sarah, unable to stay upstairs, had crept down the stairs and now sat quietly on the lowest step, listening intently from the hallway. Lily hadn't ordered her back to her room; she knew the time for keeping secrets had passed.
"Sterling hasn't forgiven you, Lily," Elena said, leaning forward. "He never did. You walking away sixteen years ago didn't just ruin his biggest pay-per-view card in Tokyo. It destroyed his credibility with the offshore syndicates. He had five million dollars riding on you dropping a split decision to that Russian kickboxer in round four."
Lily stood by the counter, her arms crossed over her chest. "I wasn't going to throw a fight for a criminal, Elena. Not then. Not ever."
"I know that," Elena sighed, shaking her head. "And that's why I helped you clear your locker and disappear into the night. But Sterling didn't go broke, Lily. Over the last decade, he built the Continental Combat League into an empire. He owns promotions, he owns betting apps, and he owns franchise gyms all over the East Coast—including Vance's place."
"Derrick Vance works for him?" Sarah spoke up from the hallway, unable to contain herself.
Elena turned, looking at Sarah with a warm, assessing gaze. "You look just like her when she was seventeen, kid. But yeah. Derrick Vance is Sterling's pet golden boy. A pretty face with decent kicks that Sterling uses to sell gym memberships and push amateur fighters into exploitative contracts."
Elena turned back to Lily. "Derrick getting folded by a woman with no gloves in front of a room full of kids made Sterling look weak. His sponsors are already calling for Vance's contract to be terminated. Sterling's stock in the regional promotion dipped three points overnight. He is furious."
"What does he want, Elena?" Lily asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "Money? An NDA? A staged apology video where I say Vance slipped on a wet towel?"
Elena reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a heavy manila folder, sliding it across the table. Inside were legal notices, promotional flyers, and a newly drafted contract stamped with the Continental Combat League crest.
"He wants a spectacle," Elena said grimly. "He's hosting the Northeast Invitational Championship in two weeks at the civic arena downtown. He wants you to step into the ring for an exhibition rematch against Derrick Vance. Three rounds, full rules, live television."
"Are you insane?" Lily scoffed, her eyes blazing with rare anger. "I'm forty-four years old. I haven't fought under commission lights in sixteen years. I have a mortgage. I have a daughter who needs to finish high school."

"If you say no," Elena said quietly, her voice heavy with regret, "Sterling won't sue you, Lily. He’ll bury you. He’s already bought up the mortgage note on this neighborhood’s development parcel. He’s already hired private investigators to dig into your tax filings from your fighting days. And Derrick Vance has four bruised ribs and an army of meathead instructors who have zero morals when it comes to intimidation."
Elena tapped the table with her forefinger. "He's not asking, Lily. He's cornering you."
