Chapter 8 - THE SHIELD OF THE LITTLE PEOPLE

Luca walked slowly back to his walnut desk. He didn't touch the silver key immediately. He stood looking down at its polished surface, processing the catastrophic, explosive reality that had just been laid bare before him.
The war he thought he had finished ten years ago was not over. The true murderers of his father were not dead in Detroit; they were sitting at the highest tables of power in Europe, watching his every move, waiting for him to drop his guard.
At that exact moment, a soft, tentative knock sounded at the heavy oak study door.
The door swung open two inches.
Three-year-old Mia Reyes peeked her little head around the carved wooden frame. She had taken off the oversized black sunglasses and the tiny black jacket, but she was still wearing her fluffy lavender princess dress and her silver shoes.
In her small hands, she was holding a half-eaten chocolate chip cookie, her wide brown eyes looking curiously into the quiet, dark room.
Behind her, Elena stood in the corridor, her face filled with quiet, anxious apology as she gently held Mia's small shoulder.
"Mr. Valente..." Elena murmured softly from the hallway. "I am so sorry to interrupt again... Mia insisted on bringing you a cookie before her afternoon nap."
Julian immediately adjusted his suit jacket, stepping back into a posture of formal, professional distance, his face returning to its impenetrable, cold composure.
Luca looked at the little girl standing in his doorway.
The heavy, suffocating darkness that had filled the study seconds ago seemed to part instantly under the light of her bright, innocent presence. He looked at her lavender princess dress, remembered her bold, clear words from earlier that morning—They protect the little people—and felt a profound, golden clarity wash through his soul.
Luca walked around his desk, dropped down onto one knee on the Persian rug, and offered Mia a small, genuine smile.
"Thank you, Mia," Luca spoke softly, reaching out with his large hand to carefully take the chocolate chip cookie from her tiny fingers. "This is very important business."
Mia beamed with pure delight, nodding her dark curls happily. "I told Mommy you'd like it! Important people need cookies to be strong!"
Luca looked up from the little girl to her mother, Elena, offering a calm, reassuring nod that signaled complete safety and warmth.

"Take her down for her nap, Elena," Luca instructed softly. "She's done enough good work for one day."
Elena offered a deep, grateful bow of her head, took Mia's small hand, and guided the happy three-year-old girl down the warm corridor toward the living quarters.
