Chapter 4 - THE RING ON THE WALNUT DESK

Two hours later, the warm morning sun had faded behind heavy gray storm clouds, plunging the Valente estate into a quiet, shadowed winter chill.
In the west wing of the compound sat Luca’s private study—an immense, vaulted sanctuary lined with thousands of leather-bound historical volumes, dark oil paintings of forgotten European landscapes, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the frozen gardens. At the center of the room sat a massive, custom-built desk carved from a single slab of dark, aged walnut wood.
Luca sat in his high-backed leather executive chair, dressed in a fresh, tailored black suit jacket over a crisp black shirt.
Sitting across from him in an upholstered leather armchair was Julian Mercer.
At thirty-nine, Julian was Luca’s closest, most trusted associate—a man who had stood at Luca’s right hand for ten years, managing syndicate logistics, high-level corporate acquisitions, and security protocols across three states. Julian had silver-streaked dark hair, an impeccably groomed dark suit, a calm, disciplined demeanor, and the smooth, unreadable confidence of an elite operative who knew every secret inside the Valente organization.
Julian was holding a leather-bound financial ledger, speaking in a low, measured baritone about the quarterly shipping yields from the Port of Chicago.
"...the docks are clear for the third quarter, Luca," Julian said smoothly, adjusting his posture. "The local precinct captains have been compensated, and the new warehouse facility in Cicero is completely operational."
Luca was listening, but his mind was elsewhere.
Mia’s childish words from earlier that morning kept echoing in the back of his consciousness: They protect the little people. The simple phrase had stirred an old, buried memory—a lingering, unsolved shadow surrounding the dark night twelve years ago when his father, the former Don Vincenzo Valente, had been ambushed and executed in the basement of their old estate.
Luca’s sharp gray eyes drifted down from Julian’s face, settling casually on Julian’s right hand, which was resting flat against the dark walnut desk.
Adorning Julian’s right ring finger was a heavy, custom-crafted black onyx ring.
Set deep into the polished black stone was an intricate, raised silver emblem—a sharp, aggressive silhouette of a striking hawk with outstretched wings.
Luca’s gaze locked onto the ring. His pupils dilated instantly, his broad shoulders tightening beneath his black jacket as a sudden, sharp spike of ice shot down his spine.
Julian, sensing the sudden, unnatural silence in the room, stopped mid-sentence. He looked down at his own hand, saw where Luca’s eyes were pinned, and a subtle, fraction-of-a-second flash of tension passed over his face.
Slowly, methodically, Julian began to slide his right hand backward off the desk, attempting to pull it down toward his lap.

"Put your hand back," Luca commanded.
His voice was not loud, but it carried a razor-sharp, lethal coldness that stopped the air in the study dead in its tracks.
