Chapter 1 - THE TIE AND THE PRINCESS DRESS

The private dressing room of the Valente estate was a shrine of dark, polished mahogany, floor-to-ceiling smoked glass mirrors, and tailored black wool. It smelled of expensive Italian leather, cedarwood, and cold lavender cologne. Outside the high arched windows, a damp autumn fog hung over the manicured grounds of the Chicago compound, but inside, the warm recessed amber lights bathed the room in a quiet, golden glow.

At thirty-two, Luca Valente was an intimidating, imposing presence. Standing six-foot-three with broad shoulders, dense muscular build, and dark wavy hair swept back from his forehead, he possessed razor-sharp gray eyes that rarely registered warmth. Subtle, dark ink crept up the left side of his neck above his open-collar black shirt and wound around his forearms. He was the undisputed boss of the Valente syndicate—a man whose single word could collapse corporate boards or clear entire city blocks.

He pushed open the heavy oak door of his dressing room, pulling off his suit jacket, expecting the usual quiet solitude of his morning routine.

He stopped dead in his tracks.

Standing directly in front of his primary three-panel full-length mirror was three-year-old Mia Reyes.

Mia was a tiny, radiant figure of pure chaos. She had long dark curls held in place by a pale silver bow, wearing a fluffy, radiant lavender princess dress made of layered tulle. But over the dress, she had draped a tiny, oversized black children’s blazer that hung off her shoulders. On her face sat Luca’s expensive, square black sunglasses—covering her entire upper face down to her nose—and around her neck hung one of Luca’s signature silk black ties, tied in a messy, oversized knot that hung down past her knees, almost touching her tiny silver shoes.

In her right hand, she clutched a brown plastic toy briefcase.

Mia had widened her stance, setting her small feet apart on the plush Persian rug, crossing her tiny arms over her chest, and forcing her jaw forward into a hilarious, exaggerated imitation of Luca’s cold, intimidating glare.

Luca stared at the three-year-old child for three long seconds, his razor-sharp gray eyes blinking in complete, unadulterated shock.

Mia turned her head toward the doorway, adjusting the oversized black sunglasses with one chubby finger.

"Do I look like you now?" Mia asked, her small, clear voice ringing out with supreme confidence against the quiet mahogany walls.

Luca slowly folded his massive arms over his broad chest. The cold, unyielding mask he presented to the underworld twitched at the corners as he fought against a genuine, uncharacteristic smile.

"Why are you dressed like me, Mia?" Luca asked, his deep baritone voice resonant, low, and quiet.

May you like

Mia puffed out her chest beneath the lavender tulle and the oversized black blazer, lifting her chin proudly.

"Because you're important," she answered immediately, without a single second of hesitation.
