Chapter 10 - THE LIGHT IN THE SHADOWS

An hour later, the heavy autumn rain had stopped over the Valente compound, leaving the ancient oak trees glistening under the soft, golden beams of a late-afternoon sun breaking through the gray clouds.

In the second-floor master nursery, three-year-old Mia Reyes lay fast asleep on a plush velvet bed, wrapped in a warm wool blanket, her brown plastic toy briefcase resting on the nightstand beside a glass of warm milk.

Elena sat quietly in an armchair beside the window, folding small cotton dresses, her face relaxed, warm, and radiant with a peace she had never known before entering this house.

Down in the main courtyard, three jet-black, armored luxury SUVs stood idling softly in formation, their high-powered V8 engines purring with a low, predatory rumble as dark-suited enforcers loaded heavy tactical cases into the rear compartments.

Luca Valente stood on the grand stone terrace above the driveway, wearing his heavy black wool overcoat against the crisp afternoon wind.

Beside him stood Julian Mercer, holding a secure satellite terminal displaying encrypted flight paths to Europe.

Luca looked back over his shoulder at the sunlit windows of the second-floor nursery, seeing the quiet, peaceful sanctuary he had built inside his fortress. He pulled his leather gloves tightly onto his hands, buttoned his dark coat, and looked out over the Chicago skyline glowing in the golden sunset.

He had spent his life surrounded by shadows, blood, and deceit, but as he stepped down the stone stairs toward his waiting convoy, he knew he was no longer a man running from his past.

He was the Don who protected the little people, and nothing in the world would ever stand in his way again.
