Chapter 5 - THE EMBLEM OF THE HAWK

Julian stopped his hand three inches from the edge of the walnut desk.

The silence in the study became heavy, thick, and suffocatingly tense. The quiet hum of the rain hitting the high arched windows seemed to amplify the sudden, dangerous drop in the room's temperature.

Julian slowly moved his right hand back onto the dark wood, resting it flat against the surface, his face returning to its calm, unreadable composure.

"Luca..." Julian began softly, his tone practical and even. "It's just an antique ring. I purchased it from an estate collector in New York three years ago—"

Luca didn't listen to the excuse. He slowly rose from behind his massive walnut desk, his six-foot-three frame unfolding like a shadow, casting a long, intimidating silhouette across the Persian rug. He didn't unholster a weapon; he simply walked around the desk with slow, heavy, deliberate strides until he stood two feet away from Julian’s chair.

He leaned down, his broad hands gripping the dark arms of Julian’s leather armchair, locking the older man in place with his massive frame.

Luca stared down at the black onyx ring, his gray eyes burning with an intense, terrifying focus.

"Where did you get that ring, Julian?" Luca asked, his voice dropping an octave into a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.

Julian sat perfectly still, his dark eyes meeting Luca’s gaze. He didn't blink. He didn't stammer. "I told you. A collector in—"

"Don't lie to me," Luca interrupted, his baritone dropping further, laced with an absolute, lethal finality. "I know every piece of jewelry you've worn for ten years. You've never worn black onyx on your right hand."

Luca’s mind pulled a fragmented, traumatic memory out from the darkest, deepest vault of his childhood.

Twelve years ago. The night his father died.

Luca had been twenty years old, hiding behind a false wall panel in the basement storage vault while gunfire erupted through the house. Through a narrow two-inch gap in the wood, he had watched his father collapse onto the concrete floor. He remembered a dark-suited figure stepping over his father's body—a man whose face was completely hidden in the pitch-black shadows, but whose right hand had reached down to adjust his coat collar.

In that brief, fraction-of-a-second moment, a beam of light from an emergency lantern had glinted off the man's right hand.

A black onyx stone. A silver hawk with outstretched wings.

Luca had spent twelve years believing the assassin was a rival boss from the Detroit syndicate—a family whose official crest was a golden lion. He had waged a five-year war that wiped out two entire families in retribution for his father's death.

And yet, sitting right here in his private study, on the hand of the man he had trusted to run his empire for a decade, was the exact same hawk.

"Whose symbol is the hawk, Julian?" Luca whispered, his face inches from Julian’s cheekbone.
