Chapter 7 - THE ARCHITECTURE OF SECRETS

Luca slowly pushed himself back from Julian’s chair. He stood at his full six-foot-three height, his heavy black suit feeling like an iron cage around his chest. He turned his back to Julian, walking slowly over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-soaked gardens.
The fog outside had thickened, wrapping the oak trees in a ghost-white shroud.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Luca asked. His voice was flat, devoid of emotion, carrying a deadly, terrifying quietness. "Ten years, Julian. You sat at my table. You drank my wine. You helped me bury two hundred men in Detroit thinking they were the ones who ordered the hit on my father."
Julian stood up slowly from his armchair. He didn't reach for his coat or try to back toward the heavy oak study door. He stood with his hands folded in front of his suit jacket, his posture respectful, quiet, and filled with a solemn, fatherly regret.
"Because if I told you the truth ten years ago, Luca," Julian explained softly, "you were twenty years old, fueled by blind rage, and you would have charged straight into the high council in Rome. They would have butchered you before you ever reached the airport."
Luca turned his head slowly, looking at Julian over his broad shoulder, his razor-sharp gray eyes burning like liquid ice.
"And now?" Luca asked softly.
Julian reached into his inner suit pocket, pulled out a small, antique silver key, and laid it flat on the dark walnut desk beside the leather-bound financial ledger.
"Now you are thirty-two," Julian said, his baritone firm and absolute. "You control the Midwest. You have the loyalty of your men, the protection of your compound... and you have the intelligence to understand that your father didn't die to protect an empire. He died to protect a child."
Luca stared at the small silver key resting on the dark walnut desk.
"What does that key open?" Luca demanded.

Julian took a slow, deep breath, looking toward the hallway where the faint, distant sound of three-year-old Mia's innocent laughter echoed from the grand foyer below.
"It opens the iron vault beneath the floorboards of your father's private library in Florence," Julian revealed quietly. "Inside that vault are the names of the five senior bosses who ordered his death—the five men who currently sit on the Commission in Europe, waiting for you to make a mistake."
