Chapter 6 - THE CRACK IN THE TEN-YEAR LIE

The atmosphere inside the study shattered completely.

For ten years, Julian Mercer had been an unshakeable, granite pillar of absolute control—a man who had faced federal indictments, rival ambushes, and multi-million-dollar syndicate crises without ever showing a single crack in his polished facade.

Now, for the very first time in a decade, Julian’s calm expression cracked wide open.

His jaw tightened, his brow furrowing as a look of deep, profound, and ancient fatigue washed over his face. He didn't reach for a gun. He didn't try to push Luca's broad frame away. He slowly lifted his dark eyes, looking directly into the razor-sharp gray eyes of the young Don he had raised into power.

"Your father never told you what really happened that night, did he, Luca?" Julian asked softly.

His voice was devoid of panic or arrogance; it carried a heavy, sorrowful weight that sent a cold wave of shock straight through Luca’s chest.

Luca froze.

His broad hands remained gripped tightly around the arms of Julian’s armchair, his knuckles turning ghostly white against the leather. The world around him seemed to slow to an absolute standstill.

"What did you say?" Luca demanded, his voice barely above a whisper, yet dripping with a terrifying, dangerous edge.

Julian slowly raised his right hand, closing his fingers into a tight fist around the black onyx ring, resting it against his chest.

"You think I wore this ring to disrespect your father's memory?" Julian murmured, shaking his head faintly. "Luca... this ring belonged to your father."

Luca’s breath hitched in his throat. His gray eyes widened slightly as the impossible words echoed through his mind.

"You're lying," Luca spat, his voice trembling with a sudden, violent rage. "My father wore the Valente crest—the cresting wave and the silver sword! He never wore a hawk!"

"Publicly, yes," Julian corrected, his tone quiet, firm, and absolute. "Publicly, Vincenzo Valente was the honorable Don who ruled Chicago with tradition. But behind closed doors... thirty years ago, before you were born, your father built a secondary, classified intelligence network across Europe. A network known only to three men in the world."

Julian looked directly into Luca's eyes, his expression solemn and heavy.

"The Hawk was your father's personal seal, Luca," Julian revealed. "And the man who walked into that basement twelve years ago wasn't an assassin from Detroit. He was an operative sent by your father's own inner council to execute him before he could hand those classified ledgers over to you."

Luca stared at Julian, his mind racing through ten years of calculated lies, false wars, and buried bloodlines, realizing that the empire he had built upon his father's grave was constructed on a foundation of total deception.
