Chapter 7 - The Midnight Fever

At 2:00 AM, the Bellevue estate was bathed in quiet silver moonlight.

Inside my ground-floor master suite, the only sound was the soft, mechanical hum of the bedside heart monitor and the gentle patter of night rain against the rose garden windows.

I woke up soaked in a cold, shivering sweat.

A deep, burning sensation radiated from my lower back, sending a wave of nausea crashing through my head. I tried to sit up, but my limbs felt heavy, weak, and burning hot.

"Lucian..." I rasped, my throat feeling dry as sandpaper.

The heart rate monitor beside my bed instantly chimed, its green numbers spiking as my pulse accelerated to one hundred and thirty beats per minute.

Within four seconds, the door of my suite opened silently.

Lucian stepped into the room. He was wearing dark sweatpants and a grey t-shirt, his hair slightly messier than usual, proving he hadn't been sleeping either. In his hand, he held a glass of water.

He took one look at my flushed face and dropped the glass onto the nightstand, striding to my side instantly.

"Ava," Lucian said, his broad palm pressing gently against my forehead. His hand felt cold against my burning skin. "You’re running a fever."

"My back..." I gasped, tears of pain leaking from the corners of my eyes. "Lucian... it hurts so bad..."

Lucian pressed the emergency medical page button on the wall unit.

"Dr. Vance!" Lucian commanded into the intercom speaker. "Ground floor suite, right now! She has a high fever and lower back distress!"

Within ninety seconds, Dr. Vance and two night nurses flooded into the suite carrying emergency diagnostic kits.

"Temperature is 102.4," the nurse reported, placing a digital thermometer against my temple. "Blood pressure is rising!"

Dr. Vance conducted a rapid ultrasound scan, her brow furrowing in deep concern as she reviewed the screen.

"It’s a secondary kidney infection brought on by the severe dehydration she suffered on the night she was evicted," Dr. Vance explained quickly, looking at Lucian. "The infection is triggering inflammatory markers near her uterus. If we don't bring this fever down within forty-five minutes, it will trigger full-term premature labor."

Panic clawed at my throat. "No... please... it’s too early... they’re only twenty-six weeks..."

"Ava, look at me," Lucian commanded, leaning down until his face was inches from mine. He grabbed both of my shaking hands, locking his charcoal eyes onto mine with absolute, unwavering dominance. "Look at me, Ava. You are not going into labor tonight. I am right here."

"I’m scared, Lucian..." I sobbed, my body shivering violently under the heavy blankets.

"I know," Lucian whispered, his voice thick with an emotion that shook him to his core. "I know, my sweet girl. But I’ve got you. I swear to you on my life, I’ve got you."

Dr. Vance prepped a high-potency intravenous antibiotic drip while the nurses arranged cold ice packs around my neck and shoulders.

"We need to keep her calm while the antibiotics work," Dr. Vance said low to Lucian. "High stress will accelerate the uterine irritability."

Lucian didn't hesitate. He climbed onto the wide king-sized bed, sliding behind me, pulling my burning, trembling body back against his broad, solid chest. He wrapped his powerful arms securely around my waist, holding me tight, taking the weight of my body off my aching lower back.

His chin rested gently against the top of my damp head, his deep chest rising and falling in slow, rhythmic, hypnotic breaths.

"In and out, Ava," Lucian whispered into my hair, his hands gently stroking my stomach. "Breathe with me. One... two... three..."

For two long, terrifying hours, as the fever fought against the medicine, Lucian did not move an inch. He held me through every shiver, every spike of pain, whispering soft, protective words into my ear until the burning heat in my blood slowly began to recede.

By 4:30 AM, my temperature dropped back to 98.6 degrees.

My breathing softened, my heart rate normalized on the monitor, and the deep ache in my back dissolved into a gentle, sleepy warmth.

As I drifted back toward sleep, safely cocooned within Lucian’s powerful arms, I felt his lips press softly against the crown of my head.

"I won't let anything happen to you, Ava," Lucian whispered into the quiet dark. "Not now. Not ever."
