Chapter 1 - The Storm on the Bridge

The interior of the armored SUV tasted of rich leather, polished cedar, and rain.
Outside, the storm had turned violent, beating against the reinforced glass windows in rhythmic sheets of cold grey water. I sat huddled in the deep leather seat, clutching my abdomen with both hands while my phone screen continued to glow in the dim interior, displaying Nathan’s ruthless threat.
I know you're carrying triplets now. You won't be leaving that hospital with my heirs.
Lucian Blackwood did not speak immediately. He leaned forward, taking the glowing device gently from my trembling fingers. His hand was immense, warm, and entirely steady. His dark charcoal eyes skimmed the message, taking in the photograph of Nathan standing triumphantly in the marble atrium of St. Jude Medical Center flanked by his legal team.
"Triplets," Lucian murmured, his deep, resonant voice cutting through the sound of the rain outside. He didn't sound shocked. He sounded like a strategist evaluating a tactical shift on a board he had been observing for months. "He discarded you when he believed you were carrying a single child. The moment his medical informant notified him of a multi-fetal high-risk pregnancy, his legal team calculated the estate inheritance value."
"How... how do you know that?" I rasped, a fresh wave of agony ripping through my lower abdomen. I gasped, leaning forward, my nails digging into the soft leather armrest. "Oh God... the pain... Lucian, please... my babies..."
Lucian tapped the glass partition separating the passenger cabin from the driver.
"Vance," Lucian commanded flatly. "Priority alpha escort to Swedish Medical Center. Bypass St. Jude entirely. Notify Dr. Vance that we are arriving with a high-risk obstetric trauma case in seven minutes. I want the private surgical wing locked down."
"Sir," the driver replied, his voice crisp through the intercom. "Nathan Drake’s private security detail is currently setting up a perimeter at St. Jude. If we redirect to Swedish Medical, his scouts will flag our convoy within three minutes."
"Let them flag us," Lucian said cold, dark arrogance dripping from every syllable. "Nathan Drake built a regional real estate firm. I own the port that imports his steel and the bank that holds his construction notes. If his scouts step foot onto the Swedish Medical campus, have them arrested for federal trespassing."
The convoy surged forward, the heavy armored engines roaring as the three black SUVs sliced through the flooded lanes of the bridge.
I turned my head slowly, staring at the formidable man sitting beside me. Lucian Blackwood was six-foot-four, with sharply carved jawlines, silver-streaked dark hair, and a presence so imposing that senators leaned down when he spoke. Yet, as another contraction seized my body, his hand reached out and gripped mine.
His palm was solid as mountain rock.
"Focus on my voice, Ava," Lucian said, his eyes locking onto mine with hypnotic intensity. "You are not alone on that bus anymore. You are under my protection now. Neither Nathan Drake nor his attorneys will ever lay a finger on your children."
"Why?" I sobbed, tears spilling over my cold cheeks. "I don't even know you... Why were you on that bus?"
Lucian looked out the rain-streaked window for a fraction of a second before returning his gaze to me.
"Seven years ago, a man named Julian Bennett died in an industrial accident at a port facility in Livorno," Lucian said softly. "Your father. He died saving my younger brother’s life from a crane collapse. I promised him before he passed that I would guard his daughter if she ever fell into the dark."
My heart stopped. The breath caught in my dry throat as the SUV swung sharply onto the private medical ramp of Swedish Medical Center.

"My father..." I whispered.
"Your father," Lucian confirmed, his jaw setting hard. "And tonight, Ava, the debt comes due."
