Chapter 12 - The New Dawn

Three months after the birth of the triplets, spring arrived in Seattle.

The dark rain clouds that had hung over the city during the worst night of my life had completely cleared, leaving a brilliant blue sky over Lake Washington.

The Bellevue estate was no longer a quiet, sterile fortress.

It was a home overflowing with warm sunlight, the soft scents of baby powder and fresh lavender, and the joyful, constant sounds of three thriving infants.

In the vast ground-floor nursery, three matching cherry oak cribs sat beneath a beautifully painted ceiling mural of a starlit night sky.

I stood by the window, wearing a comfortable white cashmere sweater and jeans, gently rocking little Clara in my arms while she finished her morning bottle. On the plush play mat nearby, three-month-old Julian and Alexander were happily kicking their feet, making sweet gurgling sounds as Mrs. Hughes showed them soft wooden toys.

The heavy double doors of the nursery opened quietly.

Lucian stepped inside. He had just returned from his morning executive meetings, wearing a sharp navy suit, but the moment he crossed the threshold of the nursery, his formal corporate posture vanished completely.

He tossed his suit jacket over a chair, unbuttoned his collar, and dropped straight onto his knees on the play mat beside our sons.

Alexander immediately let out a loud squeal of joy, waving his tiny fists at his father.

"Look who’s active this morning," Lucian laughed, leaning down to press a soft kiss onto Alexander’s chubby belly, causing the infant to dissolve into bright baby giggles.

I walked over, sitting down on the mat beside him, resting my head against Lucian’s shoulder as Clara drifted off to sleep in my arms.

"How were the board meetings?" I asked softly.

"Boring," Lucian smiled, wrapping his arm around my waist, pulling me close. "The board approved the final budget for the Julian Bennett Maternal Health Center in Livorno. Construction starts next month."

I looked at him, my heart swelling with deep, quiet pride.

Over the past three months, Lucian had built six non-profit healthcare sanctuaries for high-risk pregnant women across the country, ensuring that no woman would ever be abandoned in the rain the way I had been.

"You’re an amazing man, Lucian Blackwood," I whispered, leaning up to kiss his sharp jawline.

Lucian turned his head, looking into my eyes with a warmth that burned brighter than the morning sun outside.

"I am only as amazing as the woman who gave me a reason to come home, Ava," he said softly.

He reached into his vest pocket, pulling out a small velvet box, and held it out to me.

My breath caught in my throat.

Lucian popped open the box, revealing a breathtaking ring—a flawless three-carat oval diamond flanked by three smaller sapphire stones, symbolizing our three children.

"Ava Bennett," Lucian said, his voice dropping into a deep, intense register filled with total devotion. "You have given me a family, a home, and a purpose beyond anything my wealth could ever buy. Will you marry me, and make me the happiest man alive?"

Tears of pure happiness spilled down my cheeks as I looked from the glittering ring to the man who had saved my life.

May you like

"Yes, Lucian," I whispered, smiling through my tears. "Yes! A thousand times, yes!"

Lucian slid the ring onto my finger, pulling me into a deep, passionate kiss as our three children gurgled happily around us on the warm mat.
