Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

The hallway outside the surgical suite fell into absolute, suffocating quiet.
Nathan Drake stood frozen on the marble tiles, staring at the screen of his phone as his company’s stock price plunged twelve percent in real-time. His chief litigator leaned in, whispering frantically into Nathan’s ear, pointing toward the emergency elevators.
"We... we have to go back to the office, Nathan," the attorney stammered, his brow dripping with sweat. "If Blackwood pulls the Union First credit line, the bank will freeze our payroll accounts by midnight."
Nathan looked up at Lucian.
For five years, Nathan had ruled my life with quiet, calculated superiority. He had made me feel small, disposable, and pathetic. But standing in front of Lucian Blackwood, Nathan looked like nothing more than a frightened child holding a broken toy.
"This isn't over, Blackwood," Nathan spat, trying to salvage his pride as he took two steps backward toward the elevator doors. "She signed the divorce papers! She signed away her claim to the estate!"
"She signed away her claim to your estate, Nathan," Lucian replied smoothly, his hands buried deep in his coat pockets. "She did not sign away her children. And she certainly did not sign away her protection."
The elevator doors slid shut, carrying Nathan and his terrified legal team down to the basement parking lot.
Inside the surgical bay, the tense atmosphere instantly dissolved. The fetal heart monitors slowed back down to a steady, rhythmic cadence.
Dr. Vance let out a long sigh of relief, turning off the alarm settings on the ultrasound console.
"The uterine spasms have completely ceased, Mrs. Bennett," Dr. Vance said warmly, resting a hand on my shoulder. "Your blood pressure is normalizing. The babies are stable, resting comfortably. You need absolute bed rest for the next three months, but they are safe."
Tears of pure, overwhelming relief spilled down my cheeks as I rested both hands over my swollen stomach.
"Thank you..." I choked out. "Thank you so much..."
The heavy double doors opened quietly, and Lucian walked inside. He had removed his heavy rain-soaked coat, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing strong, scarred wrists.
He walked over to the side of my bed, looking down at me with a softness that seemed completely impossible for a man of his terrifying reputation.
"They are safe, Ava," Lucian whispered.
I looked up at him, my heart hammering against my ribs for a completely different reason now.
"I heard what you did out there," I said softly. "You destroyed his company's credit line in ten seconds."
"I delayed his credit line," Lucian corrected, a faint, dangerous smile playing at the corner of his lips. "If he comes back tomorrow, I will destroy it."
He pulled a small wooden chair up to the side of the hospital bed and sat down.
"Dr. Vance tells me you need three months of absolute bed rest," Lucian continued, his tone becoming businesslike yet profoundly tender. "You cannot return to your old apartment. You cannot stay in a hotel where Nathan’s investigators can track you. Therefore, as soon as you are cleared for local transport tomorrow morning, you are moving to my private residence in Bellevue."
I blinked in surprise. "Bellevue? Your estate?"
"It sits on forty acres of gated land," Lucian said. "It has a full medical suite on the ground floor, a twenty-four-hour nursing staff, and a security perimeter that even the federal government respects. You will have total privacy, complete medical care, and absolute safety until those three children are born."
I stared at him, my mind struggling to process the sheer scale of the protection he was offering me.
"Lucian... I can't accept that," I stammered, my cheeks warming. "You’ve already done so much... I don't have any money to pay you back. Nathan took everything..."
Lucian leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the rest of the room fade into darkness.
"Your father saved my brother’s life, Ava," Lucian said softly. "There is no price tag on that. You are not paying me back. You are letting me keep a promise."

He reached out, his thumb gently wiping a stray tear from my cheek.
"Sleep now, Ava," Lucian whispered. "The storm is over."
