Chapter 9 - THE UNANSWERED QUESTION

Brandon Cole backed up half a step, his broad frame shrinking slightly as he tried to distance himself from the edge of her table. His hands dropped from his hips, hanging awkwardly at his sides.
"Who..." Brandon stammered, his voice cracking, losing all its booming arrogance. "Who the hell are you?"
The question echoed through the quiet cafeteria.
Every operator in the room leaned in slightly, waiting for the answer. They looked at her brown hair in its simple bun, her plain face, her oversized black hoodie, and the wet turkey sandwich sitting on her metal tray.
Emily didn't answer him.
She didn't look at Brandon. She didn't look at Tyler. She didn't offer a name, a title, a unit designation, or an explanation for the silvery surgical scar hidden beneath her left cuff.
She slowly stood up from the hard metal bench.
Her movement was fluid, quiet, and completely unhurried. Her lean, athletic frame stood straight beneath the black cotton hoodie. She picked up her dry paper napkin, wiped her fingers once, and dropped it neatly onto the stainless-steel tray.
Senior Chief Rhodes took a step back to give her room, his dark eyes never leaving her face. He lowered his head slightly—a subtle, involuntary gesture of deep respect that did not go unnoticed by the younger SEALs surrounding them.
Captain Vance stepped aside, clearing a path toward the center aisle.
"The briefing room is prepared, ma'am," Captain Vance said softly. "The Commander of Special Warfare Command is on the secure line waiting for you."
Emily nodded once to the Captain.
"Thank you, Marcus," she said quietly, using the Captain's first name with casual familiarity.
She turned her head slowly, her light hazel eyes sweeping across the SEAL Alpha table one last time. Her gaze passed over Tyler Graves, who looked down at his lap, unable to meet her eyes. Her gaze passed over the phone-holding operators, who stared at the floorboards in acute embarrassment.
Finally, her eyes rested on Brandon Cole.

Brandon stood frozen, his broad face pale, sweat glistening along his hairline, his mouth slightly open as he realized the full, terrifying weight of the mistake he had just made.
Emily didn't smile. She didn't look triumphant. She looked at him with the same flat, observant calm she had maintained since the moment he slammed his hand on her table.
