Chapter 11 - THE COURTYARD TACTICAL BRIEFING

The intense glare of the Coronado sun struck Emily Ross the moment she stepped beyond the threshold of the mess hall double glass doors. Outside, the midday air was heavy with the familiar, sharp scent of salt water carried inland from the nearby Pacific breaking against the naval base perimeter.
Standing on the asphalt apron were two matte-black Chevrolet Suburbans. Their heavy V8 engines idled with a low, synchronized thrum that vibrated through the soles of Emily’s plain canvas sneakers. Dark, high-level tint obscured the interiors of both vehicles, and six heavily armed perimeter guards wearing tactical gear without unit patches held a tight defensive circle around the idling convoy. Their gloved hands rested over the handguards of modified, suppressed carbines, their eyes scanning the rooftops and elevated walkways surrounding the administrative block.
Captain Vance stepped past her left side, his rigid military gait breaking slightly as he signaled the lead driver with a sharp flick of his wrist.
"Vehicle two is prepped for immediate transfer, Miss Ross," Vance said, his voice dropping into an authoritative, low register meant solely for her ears. The two Master-at-Arms officers who had escorted them down the mess hall aisle halted ten paces back, assuming security positions near the glass entrance doors to prevent any curious operators from trailing behind.
Emily didn't answer right away. She kept her hands tucked deep inside the front pocket of her oversized black hoodie, her head tilted slightly downward. The heavy fabric hid the pale skin of her wrists and the intricate, darkened burn scar—the unmistakable operational seal of a decommissioned black-budget strike team—that had paralyzed Senior Chief Rhodes with absolute terror moments earlier.
"Where is the package?" Emily asked quietly, her tone flat, measured, and completely devoid of emotion.
Vance adjusted the brim of his dress cover, the bright sunlight highlighting the deep lines etched into his silver-haired brow. "Secure site Bravo at North Island. The Director has been in the staging bunker since zero-four-hundred. The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence just cleared the authorization twenty minutes ago. They want you on the ground before the satellite window closes over the eastern sector."
Emily lifted her gaze slowly. Beyond the secure perimeter fencing of the base, the endless horizon of the Pacific Ocean gleamed like crushed glass under the midday sun.
"The boy," Emily said softly, referring to Brandon Cole—the young SEAL operator who had tried to humiliate her inside the mess hall. "Does he know who authorized his transfer to SEAL Alpha?"
Vance let out a short, dry breath through his nose. "Cole was brought in through a political favor brokered by his father’s committee connections in D.C. He thinks his trident makes him invincible. He has no idea that the world he lives in is built on top of the graves of teams like yours."
"Keep him away from the North Island briefing," Emily replied, stepping toward the rear passenger door of the second Suburban as an armed guard pulled it open from the inside. "He’s noisy. Noisy men get team members killed in quiet places."
Vance watched her slide effortlessly into the leather interior of the armored SUV. "Miss Ross?"
She paused, her shadowed face turning toward him from within the darkened cabin. "Yes, Captain?"
"Senior Chief Rhodes... he recognized the burn mark on your wrist," Vance said, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "He served in the Red Sea corridor in two-thousand-twelve. He remembers the ghost team that pulled his squad out of the burning compound in Asmara."

Emily’s pale face remained completely unreadable. "Tell Rhodes to forget he saw me. For his sake, and for his team's."
The heavy armored door slammed shut with a solid, airtight clack. A second later, the two black Suburbans pulled away from the curb, their heavy tires crunching over the sun-baked asphalt as they accelerated toward the gated perimeter of Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, leaving the elite operators of SEAL Alpha behind in the dust of an unwritten war.
