Chapter 18 - THE RECKONING AT SITE OMEGA

Emily stepped through the vault threshold, letting the heavy door click shut behind her. She did not raise her carbine to her shoulder; she kept the weapon held at a low-ready stance, her finger resting lightly against the guard.

"You should have stayed in the ditch in Erbil, Malik," Emily said, her voice completely calm, carrying an icy, absolute authority.

Malik slowly stopped typing. He turned around, his dead left eye milky and unblinking under the harsh fluorescent lights of the server room. A jagged, faded scar ran from his jawline down beneath his collar—a permanent souvenir from the explosion that had claimed his unit nine years prior.

He looked at her, his lips twisting into a dark, bitter smile.

"I spent nine years listening to the CIA tell me you were dead," Malik rasped, stepping away from the main terminal desk. "They said Division Nine was dismantled. They said the ghosts were gone. But I knew better. A woman like you doesn't die in a hospital bed, Emily. You just wait for another war."

He reached out his hand, resting his palm over a red, plastic-covered detonation switch mounted beside the main server stack.

"One press of this switch," Malik warned, "and thirty-two terabytes of operational data burn to ash. Every agent you ever worked with, every safehouse you ever used, every politician who ever signed your authorization papers... exposed to the world."

Emily didn't take a step closer. She stood near the center of the room, her shadowed eyes fixed on his hand.

"Press it," she said softly.

Malik paused, his dark eyes narrowing in genuine surprise. "What?"

"Press the switch," Emily repeated, taking one slow, deliberate step forward, her sneakers making no sound against the tile floor. "The data on those drives was sanitized four hours ago by Director Sterling's team. You aren't transmitting blueprints of Coronado, Malik. You're transmitting a trace algorithm that is currently mapping every safehouse, bank account, and secondary cell tied to your network across the globe."

Malik’s face turned pale. He looked down at the glowing terminal screen behind him, seeing lines of red diagnostic code cascading rapidly across the monitor—an automated counter-hack overriding his local terminal commands.

"You lied..." Malik muttered, his hand trembling over the detonation switch.

May you like

"I didn't lie," Emily said, her voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register. "I just let you believe you were the hunter. It's the same mistake Brandon Cole made in the mess hall four hours ago. Young men with power always think the room belongs to them... until the shadow steps out."

Malik roared in rage, his hand snapping down toward his shoulder holster to draw his sidearm—
