Chapter 7 - THE OFFICER AT THE DOOR

The sound of the pneumatic doors opening was loud in the dead-quiet cafeteria.

Stepping through the threshold was Captain Marcus Vance—the base Commander for Naval Special Warfare Group One.

At fifty-four, Vance was a high-ranking officer with short silver hair, sharp blue eyes, and a rigid, commanding presence. He was dressed in crisp, pristine Navy working uniforms, flanked by two armed Master-at-Arms petty officers carrying sidearms on their belts.

Vance walked into the mess hall with the rapid, purposeful stride of a senior commander on a tight schedule, his eyes scanning the tables to find a specific person.

He took two steps past the trash alcove—

—and stopped dead in his tracks.

His eyes locked onto the far end of the SEAL Alpha table, where Brandon Cole stood towering over the quiet woman in the black hoodie.

The change in Captain Vance’s expression was instantaneous and absolute.

The crisp, authoritative posture of the base commander vanished. His silver eyebrows shot up in shock, his lips parting slightly, his face draining of color until he looked almost as pale as Senior Chief Rhodes.

The two armed Master-at-Arms guards behind him stopped immediately, their hands dropping naturally to their sides as they sensed the sudden tension in their commander.

Every operator in the mess hall was watching Captain Vance now.

Brandon Cole turned his head toward the door, his eyes widening as he recognized the Group Commander. He instinctively straightened his posture, throwing his shoulders back, expecting Captain Vance to step in and handle the unbadged intruder.

"Captain on deck," someone called out weakly from a side table, but no one stood up. The air was too thick, the tension too unnatural.

Captain Vance didn't acknowledge the call. He didn't look at Brandon. He didn't look at Rhodes.

He took three fast, almost hurried strides down the center aisle, stopping five feet from Emily’s table. He looked at her simple black hoodie, her plain turkey sandwich, and the wet paper napkin resting on her stainless-steel tray.

Captain Vance spoke before anyone else in the room could draw a breath.

"Ross...?" Captain Vance said.

His voice carried a strange, hesitant reverence—a tone that no operator in that room had ever heard a Navy Captain use toward anyone without stars on their shoulders.
