Chapter 16 - THE GHOST ENTRY

Target Site Omega was silent, saved for the quiet, rhythmic humming of a heavy diesel generator situated near the northern motor pool.

Emily crouched in the dark shadow of a massive limestone boulder five yards from the compound’s outer mud-brick wall. She adjusted her night-vision goggles, switching the display to a dual-spectrum thermal overlay.

Through the green-tinted lens, the environment transformed into a vivid map of heat signatures.

Fifty feet away, a perimeter sentry stood atop a raised wooden watchtower, an AK-47 slung lazily over his shoulder. He was smoking a cigarette, the glowing tip showing as a brilliant white flare on Emily's thermal display. Another two guards walked a slow patrol along the southern gravel path, their heavy boots crunching against the stone every few seconds.

Emily checked her watch. The countdown timer displayed twenty-four minutes before the satellite window closed.

She moved.

Staying low to the ground, she glided across the open gravel with terrifying speed, her movements fluid and completely soundless. She reached the base of the watchtower, melting into the dark shadow beneath the wooden support beams.

She waited.

The sentry above flicked his cigarette butt over the railing. As the glowing ash drifted toward the ground, Emily reached up, her gloved hand sliding silently around the wooden ladder rungs. She ascended the tower in three fast, weightless steps.

Before the sentry could turn his head, Emily’s left hand shot out, cupping his chin while her right hand drove her double-edged titanium blade into the base of his skull with surgical precision.

The sentry went limp instantly, his brain stem severed before he could process pain or utter a sound.

Emily caught his rifle with her knee, preventing the metal frame from clattering against the wooden deck. She lowered his body silently to the floor of the tower, wedging him against the guard railing so he appeared to be leaning over to watch the perimeter path.

She reached into her utility pouch, pulled out a small electronic jammer, and attached it to the sentry's handheld radio. The device emitted a low-frequency pulse that looped the radio's carrier signal, ensuring the main gate operator would hear only static if he attempted to check in.

Without breaking momentum, Emily dropped from the tower deck, landing softly on the flat roof of the primary storage shed below.

She traversed the rooftop, using the shadow of an overhead water tank to bypass two thermal security cameras mounted along the main corridor wall. She reached a heavy ventilation grate set into the concrete foundation of the primary building—the main intake duct for the subterranean server bunker.

Using a small hydraulic wire cutter, she snipped the four steel retaining bolts on the vent hood, slid the heavy grill aside, and disappeared into the dark, metal shaft below.
