Chapter 8 - LOWERING THE PHONES

The single word—Ross—hung in the silent air of the Coronado mess hall like a live grenade.
Brandon Cole slowly turned his head. He looked at Captain Vance, whose face was pale and tight with anxiety. He looked at Senior Chief Rhodes, whose hands were still trembling beside his olive training uniform.
Then he looked down at Emily Ross.
The two junior operators who had been recording the interaction pulled their smartphones down completely, tucking them deep into their pockets with hurried, nervous movements. The silence across the forty stainless-steel tables was total now; even the kitchen staff had stepped out from behind the counter, staring at the group assembled at the end of the Alpha table.
Emily remained seated.
She didn't stand up. She didn't salute. She didn't offer a military greeting to the highest-ranking officer on the base.
She simply turned her head, her light hazel eyes looking up at Captain Vance with the same cool, unbothered calm she had displayed toward Brandon Cole.
"Captain," Emily said quietly.
Captain Vance took a quick breath, adjusting the front of his uniform jacket. His eyes darted nervously to the wet tray, the spilled water, and Brandon Cole standing awkwardly beside her shoulder.
"We were expecting you at the headquarters building, ma'am," Captain Vance said, his voice dropping into a respectful, measured tone. "Your transport was delayed at the gate. I didn't realize you had been directed to the main mess hall."
Ma'am.
The word hit Brandon Cole like a physical blow.
His stomach twisted into a hard, cold knot. The blood drained from his face so fast he felt lightheaded. A man who had just spent ten minutes threatening, mocking, and trying to humiliate a woman in front of fifty elite operators was now watching his own Group Commander address her with the deference reserved for high-ranking dignitaries or shadowy government officials.
Tyler Graves sank back into his bench seat, his eyes wide with horror as he realized he had deliberately knocked a drink over onto a woman Captain Vance called ma'am.
May you like
Brandon swallowed hard, his throat dry as dust. He looked down at Emily’s black hoodie—the cheap, unbadged hoodie he had called a "twenty-dollar Walmart sweater"—and suddenly realized that the complete lack of identification wasn't because she was low-ranking.
It was because her identity was locked behind clearance levels he didn't possess.
