Chapter 10 - THE WALK OUT

Emily Ross turned away from the SEAL Alpha table and began walking down the center aisle of the Coronado mess hall.
She didn't rush. Her plain sneakers made soft, quiet sounds against the gray linoleum floor. Her oversized black hoodie hung loosely off her shoulders, her hands tucked casually into her front pockets, hiding her cuffs and her wrists completely once again.
Captain Vance fell into step two paces behind her left shoulder, his posture rigid, his silver hair catching the fluorescent light. Behind him walked the two Master-at-Arms officers, their boots clicking in heavy unison.
As Emily walked down the long aisle, fifty Navy SEALs stood or sat in absolute, unbroken silence.
Operators who had been laughing moments before pulled their feet back to clear her path. Men sitting near the exit straightened their backs as she passed, their eyes tracking the quiet, unbadged woman who had walked into their domain, taken their humiliation without a single flinch, and brought their senior leadership to a standstill with a glance.
She reached the heavy double glass doors at the front of the cafeteria.
The automatic sensors registered her approach, and the pneumatic doors hissed open, revealing the bright, blinding sunshine of the Coronado courtyard outside, where two black military SUVs with tinted windows stood idling at the curb, surrounded by armed perimeter guards.
Emily stepped through the threshold into the bright afternoon air.
Inside the mess hall, the silence held for five long seconds after the doors swung shut.
Brandon Cole remained standing beside the wet stainless-steel table. His hands were shaking slightly. He turned his head slowly to look at Senior Chief Rhodes, who was still staring at the glass doors where Emily had vanished.
"Senior..." Brandon whispered, his voice trembling with genuine fear. "Who was that? What was that mark on her wrist?"
Senior Chief Rhodes slowly turned his head. His granite face was dark, his eyes cold as ice as he looked at the younger operator.

"That woman," Rhodes said, his voice echoing through the quiet hall, "was operating in places you aren't cleared to hear the names of while you were still in high school. If she wanted to, Cole... she could have ended your career before your tray hit the floor."
Rhodes didn't wait for a response. He picked up his untouched meal, dumped it into the trash bin near the door, and walked out into the sunlight, leaving Brandon Cole and the rest of SEAL Alpha sitting in the heavy, suffocating silence of their own mess hall.
