Chapter 8 - MARA'S LETTER

Ryan opened Mara's envelope with Nora present.

Claire asked if she should leave.

Ryan said:

“No.”

Then changed his mind.

“Actually, yes.”

Claire looked at him.

“I think I deserve—”

“This isn't about what you deserve.”

She stopped.

Nora said:

“Mara addressed it to Ryan.”

Claire left.

Not happily.

Good.

Ryan unfolded six pages.

Mara began without drama.

If you're reading this because I finally got brave, I'm sorry it took me this long. If you're reading it because something happened to me, I'm even more sorry.

Ryan kept going.

She wrote about their relationship.

Not romance rewritten as destiny.

They had been lonely.

Ryan was separated.

Mara knew he still loved Claire.

Ryan knew Mara wanted more than he could give.

They kept dating anyway.

Then Ryan ended it.

Mara was angry.

Then slept with Adam.

She wrote:

That part is mine. Not yours. Not Claire's. Not Grant's. Mine. I was hurt and I made a choice that made everything harder later.

Ryan stopped there.

Nora looked away.

Then Mara described the pregnancy.

She contacted Ryan twice.

He blocked her.

She emailed.

No answer.

She contacted Claire.

Claire met her at a coffee shop.

Ryan looked up.

“Nora knew this?”

“No.”

He continued.

Claire did not threaten Mara.

Did not offer hush money.

She cried.

Then said:

Please don't tell Ryan until you know which brother is the father.

Mara initially agreed.

That mattered.

Claire's first request was not permanent concealment.

Mara herself did not want to detonate a marriage if Lily belonged to Adam.

Then Grant arrived.

Grant offered lawyers.

Money.

A clean process.

Mara liked him at first.

He was kind.

Practical.

He brought diapers to the hospital.

He paid her rent once when maternity leave ran out.

Then kindness became management.

He kept saying:

Let's wait until Ryan asks.

Mara wrote:

I let him make your silence mean more than it probably did because it made my own waiting easier.

Ryan had to stop reading.

That line hurt.

Then she wrote about Lily.

I showed her your picture because I wanted her to have a face for the question. That was unfair. When she started calling you Daddy, I should have corrected her harder. I didn't because some part of me wanted the answer decided without another adult meeting.

There.

Mara's responsibility.

Specific.

Then Adam.

He wanted the test.

Then panicked.

Mara got angry.

They stopped speaking for eight months.

Before his death, Adam contacted her again.

He wrote:

If Lily is mine, I want her to know me. If she isn't, I still owe you an apology for making fear your problem.

They scheduled a test.

Adam died six days before the appointment.

Ryan stared at that line.

He had been the emergency contact who identified Adam's body.

He remembered the week.

His brother had seemed distracted.

Ryan assumed money trouble.

Never asked.

Another question that had been close enough to touch.

Mara ended with:

Ryan, if she is yours, please don't become her father in one afternoon because you feel guilty. She already has a life. Learn her slowly.

Then:

If she is Adam's, don't disappear either. You are still the uncle she has been looking at in pictures for five years.

Ryan lowered the pages.

Nora wiped her face.

There was one final paragraph.

Ryan read it silently.

Then again.

Nora noticed.

“What?”

Ryan handed her the page.

Mara had written:

There is one thing I never understood. After I emailed Ryan, I received a text from his number saying he knew and wanted me to deal only with Claire. Claire always said Ryan never knew. One of those things cannot be true.

Ryan stared at his own old phone number printed beneath the paragraph.

He remembered blocking Mara.

He remembered deleting the email.

He did not remember sending any such text.

May you like

And suddenly his own failure to answer was no longer the only silence in the story.

Someone had answered for him.
