Chapter 25 - CLAIRE

Claire did not ask Ryan to forgive her.

That mattered.

They sat at the same kitchen table where she had first admitted she knew about Mara.

No therapist.

No lawyer.

No children.

Ryan said:

“I don't know if I can trust you the way I did.”

Claire nodded.

“I know.”

“I don't know if staying married means rebuilding or pretending.”

“I know.”

“I also don't want to punish you forever.”

Claire looked at him.

“I know.”

Ryan almost laughed.

“You can say something else.”

Claire looked down.

Then:

“I want to stay.”

There it was.

Simple.

No defense.

Ryan waited.

Claire continued.

“But I don't want you to stay because Ethan needs both parents in one house.”

Ryan nodded.

“Or because Lily needs a family.”

Another nod.

“Or because leaving makes the story uglier.”

Ryan looked at her.

“That one sounds like us.”

“Yes.”

Claire breathed in.

“I want to stay because I love you.”

Ryan's jaw tightened.

“And because I think I can become someone you can trust again.”

Silence.

“But I don't get to decide whether that's enough.”

Ryan looked toward the kitchen vent.

“You know what I keep thinking?”

“What?”

“Everybody in this family kept deciding what somebody else could handle.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Grant decided I couldn't handle Lily.”

“Yes.”

“You decided our marriage couldn't handle Mara.”

“Yes.”

“Adam decided I couldn't handle what he'd done.”

“Yes.”

“Mara decided Ethan couldn't handle his family changing.”

Claire looked at him.

“And you?”

Ryan nodded.

“I decided I couldn't handle one email.”

They sat with that.

Finally Ryan said:

“I don't want a divorce.”

Claire started crying.

Ryan raised one hand.

“That's not the same as everything being fixed.”

“I know.”

“I still want separate rooms.”

“Okay.”

“Therapy.”

“Yes.”

“Full access to anything connected to Lily or Mara. No more deciding something would hurt me too much.”

“Yes.”

Ryan looked at her.

“And if there's anything else...”

Claire answered before he finished.

“There isn't.”

He watched her.

She added:

“And if I remember something later, I tell you when I remember it. Not when I think you're ready.”

Ryan nodded.

That was better.

Claire wiped her face.

“Can I ask something?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want me involved with Lily?”

Ryan thought about it.

“I want you to be Claire.”

She frowned.

“For now.”

Understanding came slowly.

Not Mom.

Not stepmother.

Not replacement.

Not punishment.

Claire.

“Okay.”

Ryan stood.

Claire did too.

Neither hugged the other.

Not yet.

But when Ryan walked upstairs, Claire followed.

Different rooms.

Same house.

May you like

For the first time, that didn't feel like failure.

It felt accurate.
