Chapter 29 - HOME

The guardianship hearing lasted thirty-two minutes.
Ryan expected more.
Five years of secrets.
Thousands of dollars in legal fees.
DNA.
Death.
Marriage therapy.
Thirty-two minutes.
Nora retained substantial scheduled contact.
Ryan received primary legal and physical custody through a staged transition already underway.
Lily remained at the same school through the academic year.
Patricia Lane asked Lily one question privately.
Then returned smiling.
Ryan never asked what Lily said.
That surprised Patricia.
“You don't want to know?”
“If Lily wants me to know, she'll tell me.”
Patricia nodded.
“You've improved.”
Ryan frowned.
“I didn't know I was being graded.”
“Everyone is.”
Outside the courthouse Nora cried.
Ryan hugged her.
Not because she lost.
She hadn't.
That was the point.
Lily would spend most school nights with Ryan.
Every other weekend and one weekday dinner with Nora.
Extra whenever reasonable.
No courtroom battle.
No winner.
Later that evening, Lily moved more of her belongings into Ryan's house.
Not all.
She insisted some toys stay at Nora's.
“Because that's my house too.”
Ryan said:
“Okay.”
No correction.
Her room finally became hers.
Mara's photograph on the nightstand.
Stuffed fox on the pillow.
A drawing from Ethan taped crookedly to the wall.
Claire stood in the doorway.
Lily looked at her.
“Can you help me put stars up?”
Claire froze.
Ryan saw it.
So did Lily.
“They glow.”
Claire smiled.
“Yes.”
They stuck plastic stars to the ceiling.
Ryan stayed out.
Later Claire found him downstairs.
“She asked me for help.”
“I heard.”
Claire smiled.
Not victory.
Just gratitude.
Ryan looked at her.
“We're okay?”
Claire understood the real question.
“Better.”
They had moved back into the same bedroom two weeks earlier.
Nothing about it felt like before.
Good.
Before had contained too many things nobody said.
Ethan ran into the kitchen.
“Dad!”
“What?”
“Lily put bread in the vent.”
Ryan froze.
Claire did too.
They ran.
Lily sat on the kitchen floor pushing a slice of bread through the vent opening.
Ryan stared.
“Why?”
She looked up.
“For the girl.”
Ryan's stomach dropped.
“What girl?”
Lily pointed inside.
“The one Ethan said lived there.”
Ethan appeared behind them laughing so hard he could barely breathe.
Ryan turned.
“You told her—”
“It was a joke!”
Lily stared at Ethan.
Then at Ryan.
Then started laughing.
Claire leaned against the counter.
Ryan closed his eyes.
Five months earlier that sentence would have stopped his heart.
Now it was a joke between siblings.
May you like
Ryan looked at the bread halfway through the vent.
Then started laughing too.
