Chapter 19 - FORTY-EIGHT HOURS

Adam's first email to Mara was sent twenty minutes after he left the hospital.

I shouldn't have come.

Mara replied six minutes later.

But you did.

Adam:

I need to know.

Mara:

So does Ryan.

Adam:

Give me forty-eight hours.

Ryan read slowly.

There were eleven emails in the first month.

Adam arranged the DNA test.

Adam received the exclusion.

Adam sent the result to Grant.

Then the tone changed.

Grant appeared in the email chain.

Not Ryan.

Never Ryan.

Grant wrote:

There is no benefit to immediate disclosure while Mara is recovering and Ryan's marriage is unstable.

Mara replied:

There is a benefit to Lily.

Grant:

Lily needs stability more than information she cannot understand.

Mara:

Ryan can understand it.

No response for eleven hours.

Then Adam wrote:

Let me talk to him.

Ryan stopped.

Claire leaned closer.

“You okay?”

“No.”

He kept reading.

Mara:

When?

Adam:

This weekend.

Mara:

Promise me.

Adam:

Yes.

Ryan searched the date.

That weekend he remembered.

He and Claire had taken Ethan to Grant and Evelyn's house for dinner.

Adam had been there.

He remembered football on television.

Adam bringing beer.

Adam asking Ryan to step outside after dinner.

Ryan had said:

“In a minute.”

Then Ethan spilled juice.

Claire got upset.

Grant asked Adam to help move something in the garage.

The conversation never happened.

Ryan had forgotten it completely.

There was an email from Adam the next morning.

To Grant.

I couldn't do it.

Grant answered:

Then don't force it before you're ready.

Adam:

It isn't about me being ready.

Grant:

Everything is about timing.

Ryan stared at that sentence.

Everything is about timing.

Five years of delay reduced to six words.

Mara kept pushing.

Week two.

Week four.

Month three.

Then Ryan found an email that made him stop.

Mara to Adam:

Ryan blocked me.

Adam:

I know.

Mara:

How?

No answer.

Three days later Mara wrote again.

Claire says Ryan doesn't want contact.

Adam replied:

Then maybe we need to let him choose that.

Ryan whispered:

“I didn't choose.”

Claire's eyes filled.

“I know.”

Ryan looked at her.

“No.”

His voice stayed quiet.

“You know now.”

Claire didn't defend herself.

That mattered.

Ryan returned to the screen.

The emails continued.

Adam knew the test result.

Knew Ryan might never have seen the truth.

Knew Grant was handling money.

Knew Claire was involved.

And still waited.

At month seven, Mara sent one final message.

You keep saying you're protecting Ryan from losing his family.

May you like

What if you're protecting yourself from losing your brother?

Adam never answered.
