Chapter 22 - CUSTODY

Ryan met Nora at her lawyer's office.
No Claire.
No Evelyn.
No family committee.
Just Ryan.
Nora.
Two attorneys.
And Lily's court-appointed advocate, Patricia Lane.
Ryan hated needing a stranger in the room.
Then Patricia spoke for ten minutes and he understood why she was there.
“This is not a competition between biological father and maternal aunt.”
Ryan looked at Nora.
She looked relieved.
Patricia continued.
“Lily has experienced sudden maternal loss, a major identity revelation, and rapid expansion of her family system.”
Ryan almost smiled.
“That sounds pleasant.”
“It wasn't intended to.”
Nora laughed.
Tension broke.
Patricia laid out options.
Immediate custody petition.
Shared temporary guardianship.
Gradual transition.
Overnights.
Therapy.
School continuity.
Ryan listened.
When she finished:
“What do you want?”
Everyone looked at him.
Ryan hated that question.
Because five years ago, everyone else had answered it for him.
Now it mattered.
“I want to be her father.”
Patricia nodded.
“That isn't a custody schedule.”
“I know.”
Ryan looked at Nora.
“I don't want to take her from the person who's been raising her since Mara died.”
Nora's eyes filled.
Ryan continued.
“And I don't want to be the dad she visits twice a month because everybody's afraid of changing things.”
Patricia nodded.
“So?”
“Gradual.”
Nora exhaled.
Ryan continued.
“More nights here. Keep her school. Nora stays involved.”
Nora looked at him.
“Very involved.”
“Yes.”
“Annoyingly involved?”
Ryan almost smiled.
“I assumed.”
The lawyers wrote.
Nobody fought.
That felt suspiciously healthy.
Then Patricia asked:
“What about Claire?”
Ryan stopped.
“What about her?”
“She resides in the home.”
“Yes.”
“Is she functioning as a parental figure?”
Ryan looked at the table.
“I don't know.”
Patricia waited.
That was the honest answer.
Claire had been kind to Lily.
Careful.
Almost too careful.
She never corrected her.
Never told her what to do unless safety required it.
Never called herself anything.
Lily called her Claire.
Ethan called her Mom.
Everyone noticed.
Nobody discussed it.
Ryan said:
“Claire and I are still figuring out whether we're staying married.”
Nora looked at him.
First time she'd heard it that plainly.
Patricia wrote something.
“Then don't make Lily responsible for resolving that ambiguity.”
Ryan looked up.
“I wouldn't.”
“Good.”
She closed the folder.
“Because children are very good at believing adult stability depends on them.”
Ryan thought of Ethan.
Then Lily.
Then Adam.
Then himself.
Different ages.
Same mistake.
On the way out, Nora stopped him.
“You know Mara would hate this.”
Ryan looked at her.
“The lawyers?”
“The calm.”
He laughed.
Nora smiled.
“She'd expect screaming.”
Ryan's smile faded.
“I wish she were here to complain.”
Nora nodded.
“So do I.”
Then she handed him an old key.
Ryan frowned.
“What is this?”
“Mara's storage unit.”
“I thought you cleared it.”
“I cleared what I knew about.”
Ryan stared.
Nora continued.
“The bill just renewed.”
“Who's been paying it?”
She handed him the statement.
