Chapter 8 - The Statement Keller Wanted Her To Sign

Keller finally came out of his office.

He had changed shirts.

I don't know why that bothered me.

Perhaps because everyone else still looked like yesterday had followed them into today.

He looked ready for business.

“Maya.”

She stood beside the truck.

“I’m not signing.”

“You haven't even read the final version.”

“I read enough.”

His eyes moved toward me.

“This needs to be between coach and athlete.”

Maya answered:

“Then stop looking at my father.”

Keller's jaw tightened.

Good.

She walked toward him.

Not me.

“The statement says Cody continued after I disengaged.”

“Yes.”

“True.”

Cody stood twenty feet away.

He heard.

“The statement says you ordered him to stop.”

Keller hesitated.

Maya continued.

“You didn't.”

“I told him to reset.”

“No.”

Noah came closer.

“I didn't hear that either.”

Keller looked at him.

“You suddenly remember everything.”

“No. I'm finally saying it.”

Cody stepped in.

“What did you tell Dana about me?”

Keller ignored him.

Cody moved closer.

“You told me Maya complained. You told Dana I ignored you. Which one are we using?”

Keller's voice sharpened.

“I’m trying to keep this gym from being destroyed by one bad round.”

Maya stared.

“One bad round?”

“Your father came here threatening one of my fighters.”

I almost laughed.

“I never threatened him.”

“You took a combat stance.”

Cody surprised me.

“He didn't touch me.”

Keller turned.

Cody continued.

“You did tell me she wanted me.”

Keller's face changed.

“Careful.”

Cody pulled off the last wrap around his wrist.

“Why? You gonna manage me harder?”

Maya looked at him.

“Did you know I said stop?”

He stared at her.

“Yes.”

The room went quiet.

Keller immediately said:

“You were both exchanging—”

Cody raised his voice.

“She asked me.”

Keller stopped.

Cody looked at Maya.

“I heard you.”

“Then why?”

He glanced at Keller.

Then back.

“Because I was angry.”

Maya waited.

“He'd spent twenty minutes telling me you thought I was a bully who couldn't handle a real challenge.”

“Did that sound like something I'd say?”

“I barely knew you.”

“So you believed him.”

“Yes.”

“And when I stopped?”

Cody rubbed his face.

“I wanted the last word.”

No one moved.

There was no cleverer explanation.

A professional fighter with years of discipline had let his ego make one decision for him.

Maya nodded slowly.

“Thank you.”

Cody looked surprised.

“That doesn't mean we're good.”

“I know.”

“It means you finally said your part.”

“I know.”

Keller laughed bitterly.

“This is absurd.”

Maya turned.

“What?”

“You're rewarding him for admitting he hurt you.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I'm separating what he did from what you did.”

Keller stared.

Maya continued.

“Cody chose to keep going.”

Then she pointed at Keller.

“You built the reason he wanted to.”

Keller's face hardened.

Dana had returned to the gym entrance.

She heard enough.

She said:

“My promotion won't book Cody until this is reviewed.”

Cody closed his eyes.

That hurt.

Then Dana looked at Keller.

“And we're suspending referrals through this gym.”

That hurt Keller more.

He stepped toward her.

“You can't do that based on an argument.”

“I can pause who I choose to do business with.”

Keller laughed.

“Marcus Hale walks in here and suddenly everybody loses their spine.”

Maya's face changed.

I saw the trap.

If I answered, he got to make me the cause again.

So I didn't.

Maya did.

“This started before he knew I trained here.”

Keller looked at her.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“I pushed that round because I thought you were making a stupid decision.”

“Leaving you?”

“Yes.”

For the first time, he stopped pretending it had nothing to do with her departure.

“I thought if you felt what the next level really looked like, you'd stop running toward whoever waved a contract.”

Maya stared.

“You tried to scare me back under you.”

“I tried to keep you from ruining your career.”

Cody laughed without humor.

“Using my fists.”

Keller looked at him.

“I expected you to have control.”

Cody answered:

“I expected you to tell me the truth.”

May you like

Keller had built a room where everybody else's judgment was supposed to cover his.

Now none of them would.
