Chapter 21 - TESSA

Tessa Reed was nineteen.
Amateur record.
Three wins.
One loss.
Too much confidence.
Not enough experience.
Maya liked her immediately.
That was probably why she noticed.
Tessa trained at Maya's new gym twice a week.
Fast hands.
Bad habit of apologizing after hitting people clean.
Her coach, Rick Solano, hated that.
“Stop saying sorry.”
Tessa nodded.
Next round.
She landed hard.
“Sorry.”
Rick slapped the cage padding.
“What did I just say?”
Tessa flinched.
Maya watched from the heavy bag.
Something felt familiar.
Not Keller.
Not exactly.
But close enough to make her pay attention.
Two weeks later Maya saw Tessa sparring with a professional flyweight.
Too hard.
Tessa backed away.
Raised one glove.
“Can we slow it down?”
Rick called from outside:
“You wanted to fight next month.”
Tessa kept moving.
“I know.”
“Then show me.”
The pro landed a body shot.
Tessa folded slightly.
Maya stopped hitting the bag.
Marcus happened to be visiting.
He saw Maya's expression.
“What?”
Maya nodded toward the cage.
Marcus watched.
Tessa said:
“I need a second.”
Rick answered:
“Take it after the round.”
Marcus looked at Maya.
He could see it happening inside her.
The same thing that used to happen inside him.
Move.
Fix.
Protect.
Maya stepped toward the cage.
Then stopped.
Marcus said quietly:
“You want advice?”
She looked at him.
That question alone slowed her down.
“Yes.”
“Ask her.”
Maya stared at him.
Not Rick.
Not the other fighter.
Tessa.
Maya walked to the cage.
Waited until the round ended.
Tessa climbed out.
Maya handed her water.
“You okay?”
“Yeah.”
“That wasn't my question.”
Tessa looked at Rick.
Then back at Maya.
“I don't know.”
Maya nodded.
“You want me to stay?”
Tessa hesitated.
Then:
“Yes.”
So Maya stayed.
Nothing dramatic happened.
No confrontation.
No shouting.
May you like
But Tessa did not go back into the cage that night.
And for Maya, that was enough.
