Chapter 10 - The Fighter Keller Needed To Blame

The complaint did not exist.

There was no secret filing.

No criminal accusation from Maya.

No formal statement accusing Cody of deliberate assault.

Keller had invented it because he needed Cody frightened before Cody began asking questions.

Dana confirmed that by evening.

Cody called Maya himself.

I was not present.

She told me afterward.

“He apologized.”

“What did you say?”

“That I heard him.”

“That's it?”

“Yes.”

I resisted asking whether she forgave him.

Progress.

The next morning, Keller Combat opened as usual.

That surprised me.

I had expected shame to close the doors.

Businesses are less emotional than people.

Members still arrived.

Heavy bags still swung.

Music still played.

People had memberships, schedules, rent, habits.

Noah called me.

“You should come by.”

“Why?”

“Vince is holding a team meeting.”

“That sounds like his problem.”

“He's using your name.”

I closed my eyes.

“What is he saying?”

“That the gym is being targeted because you threatened Cody and used your military reputation to pressure Dana.”

“I didn't.”

“I know.”

“Then say that.”

Silence.

“Noah.”

“I did.”

That interested me.

“And?”

“He told me if I can't support the room, I can leave.”

I drove over.

Not to rescue Noah.

I told myself that several times.

When I entered, twelve fighters were standing near the cage.

Keller was speaking.

He stopped when he saw me.

“This is private.”

Noah said:

“He invited him.”

Keller looked at Noah.

Noah corrected himself.

“I invited him.”

Keller laughed.

“Of course.”

I stayed near the door.

“You used my name.”

“I told them what happened.”

“Then tell it accurately.”

Keller folded his arms.

“You came in here ready to fight.”

“I came in angry.”

“You squared up.”

“After your fighter did.”

Cody, sitting on a bench, said:

“I stepped toward him first.”

Keller turned.

Cody continued.

“He didn't touch me.”

Another fighter asked:

“Did Maya really complain about Cody?”

Keller looked at him.

Noah answered:

“No.”

The fighter frowned.

“So why did we hear that?”

Keller's face hardened.

“Because there was confusion.”

Cody stood.

“You told me she filed.”

“I told you I heard she might.”

“No.”

Cody looked around the room.

“You said she already did.”

Keller glanced toward me.

He wanted to drag me into it.

I said nothing.

Maya had been right.

My silence forced him to stay in his own argument.

Noah spoke.

“I heard her say she was done.”

Another fighter asked:

“Did Vince hear?”

Noah nodded.

“Yes.”

Keller snapped:

“You were twenty feet away.”

“I was eight.”

The room shifted.

Keller had lost control of distance now too.

Dana entered from the lobby.

She was not alone.

A representative from the regional promotion stood with her.

No badges.

No theatrical raid.

Just business people who controlled whether the gym's fighters got called.

Keller looked at them.

“What now?”

Dana said:

“We're here to speak with the athletes individually.”

“About?”

“Whether we continue booking through this facility.”

Keller laughed.

“So Marcus wins.”

Maya entered behind Dana.

He stopped laughing.

She walked directly toward him.

“This is not my father's complaint.”

Keller stared.

“Then whose?”

“Mine.”

The room went still.

Maya continued:

“Not about Cody.”

Cody looked at her.

May you like

She kept her eyes on Keller.

“About you.”
