Chapter 24 - THE CORNER

Maya's biggest fight came eleven months after Keller.

Not UFC.

Not television main event.

But close enough that people she didn't know suddenly had opinions about her career.

Dana got her co-main event placement.

Five rounds.

Her opponent was Serena Vale.

Twenty-eight.

Six professional wins.

Pressure fighter.

Never stopped moving.

Marcus had floor access again.

This time Maya asked:

“Will you use it?”

He looked at her.

“You want me there?”

“Yes.”

That changed everything.

Marcus stood behind the official corner area.

Not inside it.

Elena Ruiz coached.

Marcus watched.

Round one went badly.

Serena pressured.

Maya circled too wide.

A right hand landed clean.

Marcus felt his entire body tighten.

Round two was worse.

Maya's nose bled.

Elena spoke calmly between rounds.

Marcus heard every word.

He disagreed with half of it.

He said nothing.

Third round.

Maya adjusted.

Jab.

Angle.

Body kick.

Serena slowed.

Fourth.

Close.

Fifth.

Exhaustion.

Thirty seconds left.

Serena trapped Maya against the fence.

Marcus saw Maya's eyes.

Not panic.

Calculation.

Serena threw.

Maya slipped.

Turned.

Escaped.

The bell rang.

Decision.

Split.

Serena Vale.

Maya lost.

The crowd booed.

Marcus didn't.

Maya stood in the center while Serena's hand was raised.

Then applauded once.

Touched gloves.

Walked out.

Backstage she sat on a folding chair.

No tears.

Not yet.

Marcus stopped outside the room.

Didn't enter.

Maya saw him through the doorway.

“You can come in.”

He did.

She looked up.

“You think I won?”

Marcus sat beside her.

“You want Dad or former instructor?”

“Dad.”

“Yes.”

She laughed.

“Of course.”

“What does Coach say?”

“Elena thinks Serena took three rounds.”

Marcus nodded.

Maya looked at him.

“You disagree.”

“Yes.”

“You going to argue with her?”

“No.”

“You're getting boring.”

“I'm devastated.”

Maya looked down at her hands.

Then finally said:

“I hate losing.”

Marcus nodded.

“I know.”

“I did everything right.”

“Yes.”

“And still lost.”

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“That sucks.”

Marcus smiled.

“Yes.”

No lesson.

No speech.

No meaning forced onto it.

Just loss.

Maya leaned her head back against the wall.

After a minute she asked:

“You want to get tacos?”

May you like

Marcus stood.

“Now you're making good decisions.”
