Chapter 5 - The Meeting Keller Replaced

Dana Ruiz did not shout.

People like Keller knew how to survive shouting.

Calm questions were harder.

“Why did you tell me Maya had a family emergency?”

Keller folded his arms.

“She had a training issue.”

“At ten in the morning?”

“Yes.”

“Maya went to the emergency room after noon.”

He didn't answer.

Dana looked at her.

“What were you told?”

“That you wanted to see me after a training evaluation.”

“I came to see you before training.”

Maya stared at Keller.

Dana continued:

“I specifically told Vince I wasn't evaluating you in live sparring.”

That changed Maya's face.

“Why?”

“Because I'd already seen your footage.”

“What footage?”

“Your last three amateur fights.”

Maya looked toward Keller.

He had told her Dana needed to see whether she could handle a professional room in person.

Apparently that had been invented.

Cody removed one glove.

Then the other.

He dropped them onto a bench.

“You used me.”

Keller turned.

“Don't be dramatic.”

“You told me Dana wanted to see whether she could handle pressure.”

“I said Maya needed pressure.”

“Same difference.”

“No.”

Keller looked around the room.

“You all want careers. Then the second training gets uncomfortable, everybody acts like I've committed some crime.”

Maya stepped closer.

“You replaced my meeting with a spar I didn't ask for.”

“I gave you an opportunity to prove yourself.”

“To who?”

Keller opened his mouth.

Nothing came.

Dana answered for him.

“Vince.”

The room went quiet.

Keller looked at her.

She continued.

“You didn't need to prove anything to me.”

Maya stared at the floor for a second.

I knew that expression.

She was angry at Keller.

Also at herself.

Because part of her had wanted the test.

Dana turned to me.

“You're Marcus?”

“Yes.”

“I've heard enough about you in the last twenty-four hours.”

“That makes two of us.”

Maya looked annoyed.

“Can everybody stop making this about Dad?”

Dana nodded immediately.

“Fair.”

Keller did not.

“You think his showing up here doesn't affect this?”

Maya said:

“It shouldn't.”

“But it does.”

“Only because you've been using him against me for six months.”

He pointed toward me.

“You kept your own father secret because you knew exactly what people would think.”

“What would they think?”

“That every room you enter has an invisible threat standing behind you.”

Maya's face went hard.

Then she looked at me.

For one uncomfortable second, I wondered whether Keller had accidentally said something true.

I had walked into his gym yesterday and changed the room simply by being there.

I hadn't hit anyone.

I hadn't needed to.

Maya had spent sixteen months avoiding exactly that.

Dana broke the silence.

“Maya, my offer to talk still stands.”

Keller turned.

“You don't have authority to poach my fighter.”

Dana looked at him.

“She is not under an active management term with you once her notice period is complete.”

“That's disputed.”

“Then dispute it with counsel. Don't use Cody Mercer to settle it.”

Cody flinched at his name.

Keller stared at Dana.

“You think I told him to hurt her?”

Dana shook her head.

“I don't know what you told him.”

Then she looked at Cody.

“What did he tell you?”

Cody answered this time.

“That Maya needed a reality check.”

Keller said:

“That's a coaching phrase.”

Cody continued.

“He said if I let her look good, she'd walk out thinking she was ready for people who wouldn't protect her.”

Maya stared at Keller.

Dana's voice dropped.

“You were trying to scare her into staying.”

Keller said nothing.

That was not a confession.

But nobody in the room mistook it for a denial either.

Then Noah stood from the bench.

“I tried to stop it.”

Keller turned on him.

“No, you didn't.”

Noah's jaw tightened.

And for the first time since I entered that gym, Noah looked ashamed rather than afraid.

“He's right,” Noah said.

We all looked at him.

“I told myself I tried.”

May you like

He swallowed.

“I didn't try hard enough.”
