Chapter 6 - Noah Had A Reason For Staying Quiet

Noah had trained at Keller Combat for seven years.

Three professional fights.

Two knee surgeries.

One bad losing streak.

A career that was still alive mostly because Vince Keller kept finding him opportunities.

That was why Noah stayed quiet.

Not fear of being hit.

Fear of becoming irrelevant.

We sat in the empty bleachers beside the cage while Maya spoke privately with Dana across the gym.

Keller had gone into his office and closed the door.

Cody paced outside it.

Noah rubbed both hands together.

“I heard her say she was done.”

“You already told me.”

“I need you to hear the part after.”

I waited.

“Keller said, ‘She's fine.’”

“What did you do?”

“I told him she turned away.”

“And?”

“He said Cody needed five more seconds.”

My jaw tightened.

I kept my hands on my knees.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

That answer cost him something.

“Why?”

“He controls my fights.”

I looked at him.

“You were a Marine?”

“Six years.”

“And you couldn't tell a gym coach no?”

He winced.

I regretted the sentence as soon as it left me.

Same mistake Maya hated.

Turning someone's service into a standard they weren't allowed to fail.

Noah looked at me.

“I could have.”

He didn't let me soften it for him.

“I chose not to.”

I nodded.

“That's different.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward Cody.

“I thought Cody would recognize it himself.”

“Did he?”

“Too late.”

“Why didn't you step in?”

Noah's mouth tightened.

“Because I had a fight offer coming through Vince.”

There it was.

Money.

Time.

A shrinking athletic window.

Normal human leverage.

No secret blackmail required.

“I told myself Maya knew what she signed up for.”

“Did she?”

“For the first part.”

I looked at him.

“She wanted the round?”

“She wanted a real test.”

That matched what Maya had admitted.

Noah continued.

“She said, ‘Don't baby me because Dana's coming.’”

I looked toward her.

She was listening to Dana.

“She said that?”

“Yes.”

“So Keller didn't invent everything.”

“No.”

That was important.

Maya had wanted pressure.

Wanted to prove herself.

Then Keller changed the rules of the room around that consent.

Noah continued.

“Vince used what she wanted.”

“How?”

“He kept pushing the line.”

He looked at Cody.

“Cody gets ugly when he thinks somebody disrespects him. Everybody knows that.”

Cody heard.

He turned.

“Say it louder.”

Noah stood.

“You want louder? You liked thinking she challenged you.”

Cody walked over.

“You watched.”

“Yes.”

“You could've stopped it.”

“Yes.”

Cody's anger faltered because Noah wasn't defending himself.

Noah continued.

“I thought you'd stop when she turned.”

“I should have.”

“Yes.”

The two men looked at each other.

No threat.

No absolution.

Just two adults realizing neither could put yesterday entirely on Keller.

Maya crossed back toward us.

“What?”

Noah told her what he'd told me.

She listened.

No interruption.

When he finished, she said:

“I did ask for a hard test.”

I stood.

She looked at me.

“I knew you'd hear that part eventually.”

“I’m listening.”

“I wanted to know whether I could handle the pace.”

“With Cody?”

“No.”

“But once he came in?”

She hesitated.

“I could have walked.”

“Yes.”

“I didn't.”

“Why?”

She looked toward Keller's office.

“Because he said leaving would prove I wasn't ready.”

I closed my eyes.

Maya continued:

“I let him get inside my pride.”

Cody said:

“Me too.”

She looked at him.

“You still hit me after I quit.”

“Yes.”

No defense.

Dana approached.

She had been speaking to someone on the phone.

“Keller just contacted my office.”

Maya frowned.

“What about?”

“He says yesterday was an unfortunate athlete-to-athlete incident and that Cody ignored coaching direction.”

Cody's face went blank.

Noah swore.

I looked toward the closed office door.

Keller had spent twenty-four hours telling Cody Maya blamed him.

Now he was telling the promoter Cody ignored him.

Maya whispered:

“He’s making Cody the whole story.”

May you like

Dana nodded.

“And he wants you to sign a statement confirming it.”
