Chapter 19 - KELLER

Vince Keller lost his corner license for one year.

Not forever.

Marcus hated that.

Maya didn't.

The commission's findings were blunt.

Failure to stop a training session after disengagement.

Misrepresentation to athletes.

Improper management pressure.

Failure to maintain appropriate separation between coaching and financial interests.

Keller could still own the gym.

He could still train recreational clients.

But he could not corner sanctioned fighters or manage licensed professionals during the suspension.

No dramatic arrest.

No locked doors.

No ruin.

Just consequence.

Maya read the order twice.

Then put it down.

Marcus looked at her.

“Enough?”

“No.”

He waited.

Maya continued.

“But that's not the same as saying it should be more.”

Marcus leaned back.

“You sound like a lawyer.”

“I pay one now.”

A week later Keller asked to meet Maya.

Marcus said nothing.

Maya looked at him.

“You hate this.”

“Yes.”

“I know.”

She met Keller in a public coffee shop.

Dana sat three tables away.

Not because Maya needed protection.

Because witnesses were useful.

Keller looked older.

Not dramatically.

Just tired.

“I wanted to tell you I accept the ruling.”

Maya waited.

Keller continued.

“I handled things badly.”

“Badly?”

He looked down.

“Wrong.”

Better.

Maya asked:

“Why are you here?”

Keller exhaled.

“Because I want to know if there's ever a path back.”

“To what?”

“Coaching.”

Maya almost laughed.

“That's not my decision.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Keller looked at her.

She continued.

“You keep asking individual people for permission to stop feeling guilty.”

His jaw tightened.

“That isn't fair.”

“No.”

Maya nodded.

“It isn't.”

Keller stared at the table.

Maya stood.

“You want to coach again?”

“Yes.”

“Then learn how to coach someone who can leave.”

Keller looked up.

Maya put on her jacket.

“That was always your problem.”

She walked away.

Outside, Marcus waited across the street.

Not inside.

Not beside Dana.

Across the street.

Maya saw him.

He lifted his coffee.

May you like

She laughed.

He had become very good at being nearby.
